phydeuxGreat way to start 2010  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jan 1, 2010

A great way to start the new year. Beautiful day with great contrasting summit views of the Pacific Ocean/Catalina Island and snow-capped Mt. San Gorgonio. It rained two days previous, so the Bear Canyon Trail was quite muddy. Came back on the Bear Ridge trail which was nice and dry (and had less horse poop).

I took my youngest son on this one while we were visiting my family in Laguna Hills for Thanksgiving. The day was clear enough to see the ocean.

kaine7Beautiful Spring Morning Hike!
Date Climbed: Mar 8, 2006

Beautiful early Spring day as I ascended the trail. No flowers in bloom and a lot of muddy horse-tracks (not to mention other horse-related material) on the trail, but worth every inch. Note that there is, as far as I can tell, no USGS marker on Sitton Peak, so you won't know that you are there except via GPS pinpointing. I hiked three miles beyond the peak on descending switchbacks just to be sure, and then hiked up an adjoining trail (through the green meadow to the left of the last scramble) to confirm things.

Ortega Oaks Candy Store doesn't open until 9 AM, so be sure to bring your Adventure Pass if you want to get an early start.

The Bear Ridge trail rises and falls frequently, while the Bear Canyon trail is more even and shaded. However, if you're hiking after a recent rain, take the Ridge trail, as the Canyon trail has poor drainage.

Most of all, bring plenty of water. The trail is clearly marked, so besides water and a Clif Bar or two, you shouldn't need anything else.

I practically ran the entire 9 mile hike. I ran out of water at the main trail junction on the way back to the candy store. Only attempt Sitton during cool weather.

Started from the lower end of the San Juan Trail on what is known as the Double Crossing - a formerly popular 31 mile run. Ran the road back to Ortega Hwy. Hopped the fence and picked up the Sitton Peak Truck Trail - now quite overgrown in spots. It was about 8.5 miles from our start point to the top of Sitton Peak. Continued on to Four Corners and down the Bear Canyon Trail to the Candy Store (2 hours total). Returned via the Chiquito and San Juan Trail to the car. (4:21 total).

Took my wife (girlfriend at the time) on this hike and she really enjoyed it. Winter months are best for hiking in these mountains.

Great spring view of the Santa Anas for my birthday hike! We saw a ton of wildflowers in bloom along the way.
