| Beautiful early Spring day as I ascended the trail. No flowers in bloom and a lot of muddy horse-tracks (not to mention other horse-related material) on the trail, but worth every inch. Note that there is, as far as I can tell, no USGS marker on Sitton Peak, so you won't know that you are there except via GPS pinpointing. I hiked three miles beyond the peak on descending switchbacks just to be sure, and then hiked up an adjoining trail (through the green meadow to the left of the last scramble) to confirm things.
Ortega Oaks Candy Store doesn't open until 9 AM, so be sure to bring your Adventure Pass if you want to get an early start.
The Bear Ridge trail rises and falls frequently, while the Bear Canyon trail is more even and shaded. However, if you're hiking after a recent rain, take the Ridge trail, as the Canyon trail has poor drainage.
Most of all, bring plenty of water. The trail is clearly marked, so besides water and a Clif Bar or two, you shouldn't need anything else. |
