We drove my Nissan Pathfinder as far into Baldwin Canyon as we could, then mountain biked almost all the way to the summit. We did encounter a locked gate when we entered the Hawthorne Army Depot, but there were no signs indicating we weren't welcome. A long day, but it was made considerably easier with the help of the mountain bikes. We were on roads the whole time.

apeakhikerlong day~  Sucess!
Date Climbed: May 19, 2007
Had a beautiful but long climb via Lapon Canyon. FYI~ we were hiking down and several military vehicles passed by on a nearby road. If they saw us, they didn't care.

surgentHiked it before 9/11  Sucess!

My dad and I got the key from the depot and drove to about 900 feet below the summit, and made an easy dayhike from there. I visited the summit while he relaxed on the slopes. Obviously, logistically simpler pre-9/11.

On a beautiful fall day this is a gret hike. Long but great. I climbed alone and saw no one all day. 8.25 hours round trip with about 5,000 feet of elevation gain. The access road is washed out at about 6,840 feet and you have to hoof it from there.

Hiked up from the bottom of Lapon Canyon to the summit. Certainly one of the top 3 vistas I've encountered from a summit! The roads are currently closed by the military for security reasons, so no cheating is allowed!
