Cold! The high in Boulder this day was 6 degrees! From Shadow Canyon on up it was actually warmer than it was further down due to the temperature inversion which was going on. It was still cold, but I was hiking in my base layers. Once I got back down, I was shocked at how frigid the lower part of the hike was. I was spoiled with a broken trail most of the way through the snow.
Made it from NCAR to the summit in about 2 hr 5 mins via Fern Canyon trail. Only stayed on the summit for a minute, for my buddy was waiting for me on Bear. Bear's summit is cooler.
Started from North Shanahan around 10am, took the Mesa Trail, then Shadow Canyon to the top of South Boulder. Didn't seem as steep as Fern Canyon but felt a lot longer in all. Great views from the top. Went back down the same way.
I visited this summit fresh off the climb up the lovely Shadow Canyon. I loved the views from the rocky summit. I also enjoyed fewer people on this summit than on Bear. From the summit of S. Boulder, the Bear summit looks like a shopping mall, people lounging and milling about everywhere. Hiking partner: shannarae2k. Dog: Stimpy.
1-5-08,1-12-08,3-29-08 The trail was icy in places. I'm glad we had ski poles.
5-10-08, 19th climb of South Boulder. Didn't feel good. Upset stomach, pressed on anyway.
This was my first climb of South Boulder Peak. Most of the climbs were via Shadow Canyon. Several of the climbs included Bear Peak. After Bear it was common to descend via Fern Canyon.
quick daytrip in the new snow! Real windy up top. Had a fun time, cept, i think i broke my little finger when I caught a slip on the snowy talus at the summit.
