beautiful - flowers were in full bloom - I started early (4.30 am) - I just got roasted on my way back (high 90s alredy at 10 am).Access road to trailhead is no problem for normal cars, as long as dirt road is not wet - several fire rinks at trailhead- great camping

I read about Picketwire over 10 years ago and always wanted to go. We rode in on our mountain bikes and arrived at the tracksite way before we anticipated due to an easier than expected trail.
Quite an amazing thing to see. Being a geology student made it even more exciting. If you can stand the heat, it is worth seeing. The gravesite, petroglyphs, and ranch are also interesting to see.

Tips: Carry lots of water, it was 100 degrees when we went (yes it is possible even in October). If you bike, make sure you use tire liners. We flatted out and used 4 slime tubes between two bikes thanks to the many 'goatheads' on the trail.

This was a great destination. If you closed you eyes you could almost envision the dinosaurs walking by! Next time I come here though I'm bringing my bike!

Very fun, very long hike. It was well worth the time and effort. The picketwire canyon is so isolated it feels like going back in time. Weather was hot, however it was breezy for most of the day which made it comfortable. I went throught 164 ounces of water!! Unfortunately the Purgatorie River had recently overflowed it's banks filling the tracks with mud. They were still discernable but not as defined as they were when Aaron and Shanna made the trek in April. We were surprised to see a convoy of 4x4 vehicles surrounding the restroom at 5 miles. It took us a while to figure out how they got down there (there's no motorvehicle access from the trail head). Turns out there is a 4x4 road with access from the other side of Picketwire canyon. What a disappointment, oh well we knew it couldn't stay hidden forever.

A beautiful hike when the prairie flowers were in full bloom. Following the river past old settler homesteads and cemeteries, to the stunning sight of dinosaur tracks. Temperatures were pleasant and I would consider this the best time of year for this hike. (But still follow Aaron's & Shannarae's advice and bring plenty of water!)

However, a huge, black thunderstorm crossed to the north as finished the hike, dumping heavy rain on us. We later learned that a tornado had passed through La Junta, doing some damage.

A long but fun day. Walking on the same ground as dinosaurs did and seeing their footprints was a real joy. We really went through the water on his desert hike, though. I can't stress that enough. Reached the "summit" when we reached the car, and just about out of water. So take lots. If you love dinosaurs or history, this is a great hike.
