Another alternate for the challenge. The hike across Humphreys basin is mostly a pleasant, albeit somewhat long, stroll, passing by a few scenic lakes.

Took a little longer than I thought to cross the Basin. Lots of streams and bogs to navigate. Seems like a wet year. Even the trail was completely flooded in a few places. Perfect weather though.

First peak I climbed with Karina. She wasn't a big fan of the airy 3rd class section near the top, but loved the view! Good short hike from our camp in Humphrey's Basin.

I failed to reach the peak during the 2005 Challenge, so I came back two years later during the Challenge while everyone else was heading to Mt. Goethe. Nice, easy hike across Humphreys Basin with gorgeous weather. Trip Report

Hiked in over Pine Creek Pass in the morning and set up camp at L Lake. From there, in the afternoon, I skirted around many lakes before climbing to the east ridge of Pilot Knob. Really nice views on a fine Sierra day.

Great views and a fun climb up the big boulders and such. Worth every bit of the energy it took to climb it.

Sierra Challenge '05. Awesome storm that turned the S. face of Emerson into rivers of mud & waterfalls. Soaked to the bone!

Day 3 of the 2005 Sierra Challenge. Beautiful day before noon, then t-storms and flash floods on the way back down from Piute Pass.

One of the easier days of the 2005 Sierra Challenge. Beautiful views. Got caught in spectacular thunderstorms on the way back down from Piute Pass.

2005 Sierra Challenge - great hike in such a beautiful landscape. The flowers were in full bloom and cloud cover throughout most the day was quite pleasant. As Matt said below, after Piute Pass on the return route, we were hit by a huge thunderstorm and it was fun counting the strikes. Mt Emerson had at least two large waterfalls coming down the SE face and one section of the trail turned into a heavy flash flooded river as a result of the torrential downpour.

Sierra Challenge 2005 day hike from North Lake. 10 hrs, including a brutal lightning storm that caught us 100 ft below Piute Pass on the wrong side. I ran over the pass and flew down to Loch Levin Lakes before I slowed down. Amazing views from the sentinel perch at the confuence of the valleys.

Incredible views at the junction of three basins. Tho' a relatively low peak you get great 360 degree views. Well worth the detour if you are in the area, just the trip thru Humphrey's Basin is worth it. Can be done in a long day from North Lake.

Climbed this on a Four Gables-Pilot Knob dayhike out of North Lake. This was conceived (beyond just being an obvious way of padding my SPS stats for the year) as a grand tour of Humphreys Basin. It was a rare idea that actually worked to perfection, as I passed countless named lakes, all beautiful, all isolated, all worth visiting. I gained some appreciation for the enormity of Humphreys Basin, which is HUGE! Pilot Knob has stunning views, some of the best I saw all year.

The only minor drawback to what was otherwise one of the most enjoyable days all summer was a thunder/rain storm that started on my way back through Humphreys Basin. It bothered me that I seemed to be pretty much the highest point for miles around in that place! Fortunately I only got a bit wet.
