chicagotransplantEast Ridge  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 16, 2009

Climbed the East Ridge. Found a nice mostly grass slope to gain the ridge along the side of some trees before the face got too steep and rocky. Traversed (class 3) over PT 12898 to Missouri Pass and then crossed the pass and went up PT 12940 A. Descended a grassy slope from that one back to the Missouri Lakes trail and out. Savage was #66/132 in Eagle County, half done!

Date Climbed: May 16, 2009

It lived up to its name....the snow wasn't exactly in prime condition...it was pretty soft. Still, a great climb. A pretty nice area in the Sawatch

Ben L. and I climbed ascended the Savage Couloir in fat conditions on a perfect day. Amazing walls surround the couloir and stellar views from the summit. Top 5 climbs.

5/3/07 - Up NE ridge, down E face, rotten snow. NE ridge is a breeze. Nice glissade of the east face, then a bunch of postholing through rotten spring snow back to the car. One of the more interesting areas of the Sawatch.

6/6/09 - Savage Couloir. Short approach, sweet steep snow climb, fun glissade. A hidden gem.

Mountain JimNorth Face Couloir  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 29, 1986

We climbed the prominent snow couloir on the North Face which joins the East Ridge a short distance below the summit. We did exit the couloir to the left about 200 feet below the ridge due to loose rock ... thus the name for our route "Chute Out"

Great day for this beauty. Wonderful views of Holy Cross to the north and Massive to the south. The two posts below and this page convinced me to attempt this since my wife had been bugging me to hike back to Missouri Lakes since we went there last summer.

Fun and exhilerating climb! Was going to climb it again this year via the same route, but I'm fed with with snow, so I'll do something else in the area. Savage though is a fun mountain and is situated in an awesome area, one of Colorado's best spots. But that's the Holy Cross Wilderness for you! NOTE: This route I took climbs up a STEEP and LOOSE couloir. Do not ascend this route unless you're experienced in this type of terrain.

Outstanding views from this one. I started from the trailhead at 2:00 AM with the idea of watching the sunrise from the top. I made it to the lake in good time but gave up the effort after wallowing around in the basin for a bit and decided to watch the sunrise from the lakes instead. A reasonable trade. Should have just packed in and spent more time in this neat area.
