Kinda windy at the top of Pioneer. Hit Sunset Peak first then walked the ridge to Pioneer. The ridge walk looked a lot steeper than it actually was. A pleasant hike, and great views!

Date Climbed: May 28, 2008

Parked at the gate on the Guardsman Pass Road. Hiked up the west ridge of 10420. Hit 10420, Clayton, Preston/10315, 10321, Pioneer Peak, and Sunset Peak. Descended to Brighton via Lake Catherine. Great snow conditions. We didn't need either snowshoes or crampons. With Anne Perry. My 14th time up here.

Skinned up from the base of the Crest Express lift at Brighton, to the backcountry entry point at the top of that lift. Of course the ski resort was closed for the season. Went along the pioneer ridge to the peak. It took less than 2 hours one-way. From the peak I back tracked, and continued along the ridge line bagging Preston Peak, Clayton Peak, and unnamed peak at N 40.60001 W 111.55839 (1.0 km N 8° as the crow flies from Clayton Peak at 10,420 ft). The whole trip, with breaks and everything took 5.5 hours.

This is at least my third time on the summit. Today it was one of eight different 10,000 foot peaks we touched as we did a version of the Brighton Ridge Run. We began at Bear Trap Fork TH and hit Silver, Scott Hill, Guardsman, unnamed 10,420, Clayton, Preston, Pioneer and Sunset. Nice challenging day of about 8 hours. 4th time (at least) on 7-22-08 as part of ridge run including Wolverine, Tuscarora and Sunset peaks. 5th (?) time on 4-21-09 See write up of Brighton Ridge snow run on Wolverine summit log.

I've got to stop drinking so much melonade. Justin A. (Gutloaf) and I bagged this and Sunset Peak this morning. We started from Albion Basin at 4:20 AM and went up via Catherine Pass. After Pioneer Peak we descended a very steep tree slope and came across the remnants of few old-timey miner's cabins. We found the lakes trail and circled back up to Catherine Pass and then ran down to the car.

Date Climbed: Dec 23, 2006

Hiked the Brighton Ridge to Millicent, Woverine, Tuscarora, Sunset Peak, and Pioneer Peak. Tremendous fun! Millicent's NE ridge is easy snow hiking. Wolverine/Tuscarora is easy snow hiking as well. Sunset is a bit harder because there is a Class 3/4 rock spine in the middle of the ridge. I chose to bypass the rock spine onto a 38 degree, north facing slope which brought me back onto the ridge. Only use that bypass under total stable snow conditions. Pioneer Peak was a beast. 3' snow drifts on the ridge about every 20 feet. Hiking down off of Pioneer was 2' of soft powder all the way to Brighton. Good workout! Views are oustanding. Highly recommended.
