mvidahoclimberMy first Solo on southwest route  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Oct 16, 2009

Very fun climb. I was a little timid to go by myself, but everything worked out okay. My best advice is that if you are going to do the Southwest ridge, go in the middle of the summer when the dirt roads are dry. There were several places where I almost got stuck. I decided not to get Independence.......time was a concern, but I will be back.

Very nice but mosquito infested walk up. Got up and down just ahead of the thunderclouds. Great views of City of Rocks from the top. Dan's right: you should grab Independence while you're this close. Of course I didn't.

I had some errands to run at Mountain Home AFB, and this peak just happened to be "on the way" from Ogden, UT. It was a great way to liven up a day of driving.

This is another nice hike to an Idaho County Highpoint. A long drive to the TH for the western ridge.

I started from the Independence Lakes trailhead. Nice trail that was also popular with cows. The lakes are in a very scenic canyon. I climbed up to the saddle between Cache and Independence and then followed the ridge to the summit.

Dave and I found a spot to park on the valley floor, then hoofed up to the snow line- not too far, really. This was the only time in my life that I have hiked through cactus in tele boots. Fun sagebrush slalom on the way down.

Climbed this on a great Fall day. Drove through the City of Rocks on some road (we didn't know exactly where we were going) and ended up really close to the summit. Just walked up from there.

Came in from the south, then followed the tree-covered west ridge to the summit. You might as well go get Mount Independence while you are there.

See Dean's report below. One adjustment - we camped on the west side of the peak along the road at between 8400 and 8600 feet. Very enjoyable hike with nice views.

Bob Bolton and I decided to go after Hyndman and Diamond Peaks in Idaho but thunderstorm activity kept us off of those two 12K peaks. So we dodged thunderstorms and found a couple of decent peaks to bag anyway, one of which was this nice one, Cache Peak.

We camped at the 8600 foot level and made an early start in order to get up and down before the daily activity started. A nice hike really, not much of any kind of a climb with a spot or two of scrambling. We did encounter snow on the upper portions but it was a blessing as it made hiking easier, not harder.

We had great views in all directions but we didn't linger very long on the summit as thundercells began forming right and left of us. The summit of Independence Peak was tempting but we left that for another day. The City of Rocks area was fascinating, I could spend several days just exploring that area,
