Drove from SLC for the weekend. Did Jeff Davis, then Bald and Buck the following day.

Went and saw the Lehman Caves - very cool.

the traverse from wheeler peak was good fun - the descent through the ancient bristlecone pine forest was sublime

peakrat76Traverse from Wheeler  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jun 28, 2006

A fun scramble over from Wheeler. Topped out at 11 AM and was chased down the north ridge/slope route in a driving rain and hail storm. The storm seemed to come from nowhere and parked on the summit of the two big peaks and did not move.(An added bonus was intense lightning.) The North Ridge might be okay as an ascent route, but I would not recommend it as a descent route unless an emergency. (loose blocks, no clear identifiable trail from foot of ridge to main park trails.)

MoapaPkRe: This is a separate Mtn?

Funny, I've thought the same thing about Bald Mountain.

Jeff Davis has over 400' prominence relative to col with Wheeler, which is considerably more than several official CA 14ers. JD is quite a challenge from the NE side.

Scrambled over from Wheeler Pk. To me this doesn't really seem like a separate peak from Wheeler. But it WAS fun watching hikers on top of Wheeler freak out when I told them I'd travered from JD!

wheeler-baker-wheeler-JD then down to Glacier trail. If you can, do this trip the other way (up JD 1st), to avoid descending over the nasty loose rock on N JD; that route would also put you in a good position to do Bald at the end of the day. If you must descend over the NE side, aim for ridges and big rocks -- the chutes are nasty.

A nice climb and a better views. No route to speak of, just aim for the ridge and climb. Look for the summit log in an easily missed glass jar under a pile of rocks.

I'm proud to say that I was a member of the team that did a survey of Lehman Caves for the Park Service at Great Basin NP. Lehman Caves is located at approx. 7000 ft, below the east slopes of Jeff Davis Peak.

After doing my work with the survey team on a Saturday eve, I got up early Sunday morning and decided to climb the mountain.

A nice exploratory outing. I had the summit, predictably, to myself.
