kavakSouth Slopes  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 11, 2004

One of the more beautiful hikes I have done in the park. Especially at the point where you top out into the basin of Shelf and Solitude Lakes. We had great weather and views the whole way.

Hiked up the S Gully which was much better than expected. Great views all around from the summit. I climbed Thatchtop enroute to the NE ridge of Powell, the over Taylor, up Otis and down Andrews Glacier. Great little hike. Car to Car 6:43.

Date Climbed: Jul 1, 2005

Turned back ~500 vertical feet from the summit due to incoming weather. Reached Glacier Gorge just as it began to storm. This is a beautiful route; Shelf/Solitude Lakes are gorgeous and the views from the slopes of Thatchtop stunning. Steep but fun scramble/bushwhack out of Glacier Gorge.

Date Climbed: Jul 28, 1987

Went up via Shelf and Solitude Lakes which are among the prettiest in the park. Very steep hike up to the lakes. Got caught in a thunderstorm on top and ended up going down the north slopes- lots of routefinding problems coming down that way.

NanitaDRoute Climbed: Reverse "S" Gully from Loch Vail trail Date Climbed: September 3, 1995  Sucess!

The S gully is not difficult, but watch for loose rocks. The .8 mile tundra slope above the gully seems to keep going and going, but you are rewarded at the summit with a great view of Longs Peak and the surrounding high peaks. We decended via Solitude Lake, Shelf Lake, and "Bench Falls". The wild flowers were out in force making this area one of my favorite places in RMNP. From there we decended to the Glacier Gorge trail and looped back to the parking lot.

KaneRoute Climbed: South Slopes via Solitude Basin Date Climbed: 8-18-2004  Sucess!

This day was intended for a climb of the Arrowhead but weird August weather dictated the need for speed. The clouds moved in at 8:30 am while I passed Shelf Lake and soon after that I decided to go for Thatchtop instead, which turned out to be a cool consolation prize from the beautiful Solitue Lake Basin.
