The summit block looked a lot worse than it turned out to be. Good rock made for a fun scramble. Great views too.

Overnight trip, camped by Foggy Lake. Sunday morning we awoke and gained the summit of Gothic, to views of rocky peaks, pines, and tarns veiled by fog.

Karl HelserFun Scramble...  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 23, 2006

Left Portland at 7:00am Friday, got to Barlow Pass parking lot at noon. Hiked up to Foggy Lake and spent the rest of the day scouting for a flat, dry spot for camp. Up early Saturday morning to shoot some sunrise pics then after breakfast scrambled Del Campo. Came back to camp for lunch then off to Gothic peak. Came back to camp for dinner and a few sunset pics. Bucked camp early Sunday morning and headed out. Big spaghetti feed at The Omega restaurant in Granite Falls (highly recommend). Back in Portland by early evening. The weather was cool & crisp at night and warm & sunny during the day. Gothic Basin is a really cool place to spend a few days exploring the surrounding peaks. I'll definitely be back to explore other routes. I love the rock slabs...It's like walking on sandpaper.

Date Climbed: Oct 17, 1999

I love the upper part of this hike, the upper traverse past the waterfalls and then across the slabs to enter photogenic Gothic Basin.
I was up there once with a couple of other OSATers (Pete S and ?) when it was pouring rain, and we felt like salmon going upstream on the trail. Stood behind a rock at the lake out of the wind, and then hustled back down the creek.
A few years later I returned by myself to do the scramble on a beautiful day.

A moderate sramble to some outstanding views. The nearby Castle Crags are also interesting scrambles to worthy summits.

One of the most scenic hikes!!! I went with my friend, Alainna. We only went to Gothic Basin & partway up Del Campo for killer views. Alainna got burned, so for all you fair skin people, slather on the sunblock!
