Williams Lake basin and surrounding peaks have to be my favorite area of New Mexico.

Awesome hike. I kinda like the views from Walter more than Wheeler. But if you're going to go that high, why not go to Wheeler? Pics

TJ311En Route To Wheeler  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 9, 2009

It was a beautiful morning on my way to Wheeler Peak. Mt. Walter received a dusting of snow the night before we hiked up. Took Bull Of The Woods route up and down. Spent a night in La Cal Basin.

Ascended via Bull of the Woods. It rained from the TH to La Cal Basin. It was clear and the summit was windy. I guess I summitted twice, once going and once coming.

Climbed the ridge from Kachina all the way to Wheeler. We hit Kachina Peak...An unnamed peak, Lake Fork Peak, "Bighorn Peak",Pt 12,728, Simpson, Old Mike, Wheeler, and then Walter. Started at 7:20am and then finished at 5:30. We started at the Williams Lake Trailhead. Amazing day! The weather somehow cooperated with us the whole time. Very fun traverse. Saw lots of Elk, Bighorn Sheep and Mountain Goats. SO MUCH FUN!!

Bagged this on the way to the summit of Wheeler. Seems pretty easy since the trail runs right over the summit.

Made this attempt seriously out of shape and paid for it. Summiting this mountain was anti-climatic since out goal was Mt. Wheeler for this trip. Nice to have it anyway. Great time with our crew.
