kavakFrom Hiker's Parking Lot  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 6, 2009

My brother-in-law and I started out around 10:30 am with the intent to hike all the way to Calloway Peak. Well, it seems that most people just do MaCrae Peak and call it a day. My brother-in-law wasn't having a good day so he was good with just the one peak. I found a younger guy willing to press on through the clouds to the next peak. There were certainly tens if not in the hundreds of people on Grandfather Mountain the Sunday before Labor Day.

Enjoyed this summit along with Window Attic. I'm sorry we didn't include Calloway, but our flight arrived late the night before and, combined with the time change, we had to sleep in a bit the next morning. The onwers demand you're off the trail by 6:00 PM, and we frankly ran out of time to continue on. Next time, next time...

I really loved this trail...the ladders, the cables, it was a lot of fun. The views seemed to go on forever. I'm sorry there is no SP page for Window Attic, a beautiful peak and fun ascent.

Climbing partner: Husband.

Fun climb up top. The ladders and steep sections were a blast. No views and very windy conditions up top.

captainbuudaIncredible view, climb, and WIND  Sucess!
Date Climbed: May 21, 2008

Set out from Black Rock trailhead up to the swinging bridge; then on to Window Attic Peak, Calloway Peak and back. The wind on the mountain was something else-- standing up was a chore, even at the parking area. The view along the grandfather trail was the best I have experienced on any trail. Amazing mountain; I will return.

Nice hike on a hot and humid day. We got chased off of the trail by lightning.

Took the Grandfather Trail from the Swinging Bridge out to Calloway and back. A word of advice about the alternate Underwood Trail around McRae..."alternate" does not mean "easier"...my knees are killing me:( A great peak though!

I had a great winter hike up the Profile Trail to MacRae peak. Plently of snow and ice and great clear winter views along the way.

I hate being caught in thunderstorm on this mountain. One crisp winter day, I could see the skyscrapers in Charlotte (> 80 miles away)

Too many tourists and views of unregulated development. Too bad because the actual mountain and its hiking is 2nd to none in the Southeast.

I originally planed on hiking to Calloway peak and up MacRae and Window Attic on the way but the mountain was closed due to near 100mph gusts on that day and the next day all I had time to due was MacRae and it was highly worth it!! Cant wait to go back.
