| This was further from 3-cities than I expected, 99 miles exactly from my new abode in West Pasco. one of the friendlier lookout attendees I've met, hung out and BS'd for over an hour. Despite the smoke from a fire burning near Ukiah, OR I was able to make out the Seven Devils and Gospel Hump in Idaho, and over in the great state of Oregon the Wallowas and Elkhorns. | |

| The distances given on the page were a little different than actual, but certain markers (such as Godman Springs Campground) were very helpful in finding the correct turnoff road for the trailhead. Very scenic backcountry, much moreso than I expected. The forest roads need more signage, however, in my opinion. Oregon Butte was the first of three WA COHPs completed during one long day; the Garfield County candidates (including Diamond Peak) and Asotin County candidates were accomplished later that afternoon. Columbia County was my 14th WA COHP completed. | |

| Very hot day, but views were wonderful. Startled a black bear in the first half mile. He reared out of the brush 20 feet away and when I waved my arms he fled down the hillside. While I visited with Cornelia, the on duty lookout, we watched the smoke plume from the School Forest Fire grow in size by 4 to 5 times. I learned later that the fire, 8 miles from Oregon Butte near Camp Wooten, had jumped the Tucannon River and raced into new fuels. To avoid possible closure of Skyline Drive, I drove out by way of FS 46 and FS 64 past the Bluewood Ski Area. This is Washington county #22 for me. | |

| I hiked this with Dean on a nice Fall Day. Snow on the ground and fog in the valleys. Nice hike. | |

| I hiked this one entirely in fog, and never saw the mountain, although the fog started to lift after I started driving away, so I got a little taste of the views. This is a very beautiful part of the state, and a very nice hike. | |

| It had taken me three tries to get to the trailhead of this simple to do hike. The first time snow blocked me about five miles from Godman Springs Campground, in late May yet. Then in June I tried again and shredded a tire about two thirds of the way in. The third time was a charm and a wonderful July day. The two people who manned the lookout had arrived just two days prior and were extra friendly. Charlie and Bev, two wonderful people who do the lookout effort year after year. Take veggies and fruits and they'll adore you. Second time: Nov 12, 2004 Fog and snow made this a little more interesting than my summertime effort but Dennis Poulin and I had a chance for some exercise and he was able to pick up a new county highpoint. I let him lead the last bit so he could stomp steps into the snow which once again proved how generous I am. It was Dennis's 2nd county highpoint of the day as he is making good inroads on the state of Washington. Third trip to the summit made on 10-6-07 with my grandson and son in law. We had snow all the way from the TeePee trailhead but it never got deeper than a few inches. The problem is the road coming in is on the north side much of the way from the Godman Guard station so another good storm will problem close that road down as snow tends to accumulate and turn icy. Check on road conditions with the FS before going at this time of year. | |
