| Very hot day, but views were wonderful. Startled a black bear in the first half mile. He reared out of the brush 20 feet away and when I waved my arms he fled down the hillside.
While I visited with Cornelia, the on duty lookout, we watched the smoke plume from the School Forest Fire grow in size by 4 to 5 times. I learned later that the fire, 8 miles from Oregon Butte near Camp Wooten, had jumped the Tucannon River and raced into new fuels. To avoid possible closure of Skyline Drive, I drove out by way of FS 46 and FS 64 past the Bluewood Ski Area.
This is Washington county #22 for me. |
