| It was a beautiful winter day. Departed from Aranzazu Sanctuary at 8:45 and reached the first western summit over the 1.500 m (Arbelaitz) at 10:45 a.m. Solo. At this point I hesitated over continuing to the easter summits of the ridge due to not exactly clear weather, being alone and very much (harded) snow over the ridges. Nobody was going that way yet. After half hour waiting for a decison I decided to join another party of two men who were planning to go that way. Weather cleared up and we could also see more people coming the opposite way (from Aketegi and Aizkorri). I finally decided to follow the ridge.
I think that, due to the fact that snow was hard and the fall was possible, crampons were necessary. Nevertheless, most of the mountaineers were without them. Not me: I could easily and safely walk over the terrain. Because this I proposed to pas to the first position (of our group of three) to open the way for my companions, who were without crampons.
Aitzkorri was reached at 12:40 (with relaxed tempo). The two others went down over the south face. I went further down alone till San Adrian pass. The key-pass next to Aiztonto Altzuna (snowed and steep band traverse) was stepped to frozen and I used crampons again for about 100 m. |
