Date Climbed: May 2, 2009

I slept on my way to Valencia Peak. The summit was in a whiteout anyway, so I did not miss much. Woke up on the top of Oats peak to enjoy the views and the hike down.

Great hike. Can't beat the views and the weather was perfect. Momma and baby came with - we even snuck Frank (Yorkie) up.

Did this as part of a 12k trail run race put on by Pacific Coast Trail Runs. Was my first trail run race ever and the run up Valencia Peak was fun (hike actually - was too steep to run that section) and made more exciting by 30+ mph winds. Very nice views.

Temporary local to the area while I go to Cal Poly, so I frequent this area. I suggest hiking Valencia peak as a sunrise hike. Hike starts with your breathing and the ocean waves crashing on the shore. Then as the sun gets closer to rising a couple birds start to sing, movement in the bushes, a few more cars drive in Los Osos and Morro Bay. Then as you reach the top, all the sound and sights culminate and make an amazing view, generally with fog creeping through the distant valleys toward San Luis Obispo. You experience God/Mother Nature turn up the volume of life.

A tough but fun route to climb. Took the easy way down on the trail. Wildflowers were just starting to bloom and were beautiful! Great views of Morro Bay from up there...

Nice hike at midday, but not too hot because of the fog. Wildlife included hundreds of lizards and just one tick!

Arrived at Montana de Oro to beautiful clear weather for some car camping with my family, but the fog rolled in that night and stuck. The first day was tidepool and beachcombing. On Tuesday I took off for a quick up and back before lunch. Broke out of the fog where the trail branches off the Oats Peak trail for the summit. The view to the west was a carpet of white. North toward the Ventana area was hazy, but the rest was very nice. Much warmert up on top than down in the fog on the beach

A nice 2X for me. This is a nice, short, easy, winter hike, great for locals to condition. I'll have to come back to do Alan Peak. Should I do a SP page for Oats Peak as well?

O.K., Bob!

This is a pretty park - much bigger than it seems. Combined it with a hike out to Oats and Alan Peaks, for a nice 3hr outing. Trip Report 1000pks - I wouldn't make a separate page for Oats - too close and poorer views anyway. But a mention of it with Alan Peak might be helpful for those looking for a longer challenge.
