| Sam and I had bailed from Wheeler Peak earlier in the day after failing to correctly identify the start of the West Arete. I thought Night Cap Peak would be a short afternoon/evening outing on the way back over Sonora Pass to at least get a bit of exercise and perhaps salvage some pride. Started at 4pm and found the old unsigned Night Cap Trail with no problems, but the hike turned out to take a bit longer than I expected, closer to seven hours than the four I'd anticipated beforehand, resulting in a return by headlamp. In fact, I didn't even make it down to the Kennedy Creek trail before dark--good thing the XC here was pretty easy...
The ridge was long with several ups and downs, but with some surprisingly fun scrambling in a couple of places. From the (east) summit, I descended something that was pretty much like a slot canyon for the first 100 feet or so... no more than easy class 3 but bizarre and really cool.
Nice views. I'm still not sure exactly where the peak is--the register on the west summit calls that one "West Peak," but the point labeled "Night Cap Peak" on the 7.5' doesn't have a register. I couldn't tell for sure which was higher. |
