| TinMan61 | Nice Day, Nice Trail ![]() Date Climbed: Jun 12, 2009 | |
| Made this hike with a friend of mine. The day was only a little hot and the breeze more than made up for it. The trail (Hale Brook)was easy to negotiate and we would have had to work really hard to get lost. We took a break near the upper falls and then made the last bit to the top. Overall very easy and a well-maintained trail. The summit was nice and wide and accomodated three groups at once without crowding. The only drawback was the lack of any views due to the trees, but all the guidebooks had warned about that. | ||

| We hiked as a loop following Zealand Trail and Twinway to the Zealand Falls Hut, then taking Lend A Hand to the summit of Hale. From the summit we took Hale Brook Trail down, and walked up the road in the rain to the Zealand Trailhead. | ||

| Tahawus | Mount Hale ![]() Date Climbed: Jul 27, 2007 | |
| Climbed via the Hale Brook Trail from Zealand Road. This supposedly easy hike turned out to be much more difficult than we thought primarly because of 90 degree tempertures along the whole way. Had only a very hazy view of the Twin Range from the rocky pile on top. Will return on a cooler day. | ||

| I made this a quick hike. The weather forecast was rain, and about 15 minutes to the car it started a slight drizzle. This is a mountain you can do quickly. There is some minimal views still on the top. The trail is easy to follow, and it's not really rocky at all. It wasn't even muddy, and it rained the day before. | ||

| Great quick day hike when our plans for a long Memorial Day weekend were killed. Quite a few cars in the lot, but saw only a few couples. No winter gear needed/carried/used though gaiters would have been smart. There was still snow in places. | ||

| Sbrande | Hiking Hale ![]() Date Climbed: Sep 30, 1988 | |
| Can be more of an adventure than the description indicates. We went via Zealand notch trail to the Lend a Hand trail, which lived up to its name, being that day more a flowing creek and less a trail. You will know the word 'puncheon' before you are done. A descent in twilight, hugging trees in order to make out trail marks. | ||

| Great Day and the trail had interesting changes. The largest pile of rocks on the summit that I ever saw, and the only way to get a summit view was from its top. | ||

| We started at 4:30 from the road. It only took about 1 hour to reach the top and we were down just as it was getting really dark. A relatively easy 4000'er. | ||

| I solo hiked this peak after splitting off from my hiking partners near Zealand hut. Lend-a-Hand has numerous bog bridges that were showing their age and there was a great deal of water/mud still on the trail from a storm over a week ago. There were obvious signs of much more water in most places (i.e. pine needle rings high on rocks and bog bridges). It was not the best marker trail I've ever hiked on. But it was very gradual and the weather was awesome, so it all evened out. The Hale Brook Trail had a large amount of blow down from the same storm and there were a lot of trees down in the trail. I didn't see anyone from when I started on Lend-a-Hand until I hiked out of Zealand Road and back to my car. It was very peaceful. | ||

| From the journal: Having just returned from Africa and feeling somewhat fragile from a bout of food poisoning and jet-lag, I felt that fresh air and excercise would do me good. The day was beautiful and sunny with a stiff breeze. Starting at the trailhead 2.5 miles from US302, I hiked up the Hale Brook trail. It climbed steadily through lovely forest before achieving the summit at 2.5 miles. The summit, marked by a large rock pile, is a barren clearing ringed by low trees. If you are tall or can stand on the rock pile, a precarious perch in the high winds, you are treated to a full 360 degree panorama of the Presidentials and Willey Range to the east, and the Pemi to the south and west. From the summit and after a well-deserved lunch, I took the Lend-a-Hand trail south along the ridge of Mt. Hale. A few tenths of a mile down from the summit, you come upon a marginal side trail to the east which in a few yards leads to a large boulder with an excellant view to the south into Zealand Notch and out towards Carrigan. The trail continues crossing over some fens, finally meeting up with the AT and shortly after Zealand Falls Hut at 2.8 miles. The Falls themselves are interesting and a good place to relax in the sun and even swim. However, clouds had rolled in and thunder was heard. I rested at the hut and enjoyed a wonderful peice of carrot cake. As I was traversing the steep .2 miles down to the Zealand Pond trail, the rain and thunder started in earnest. Donning rain-gear, I trudged along on another 2.5 miles of relatively easy, rock-free trail past two ponds and a number of lovely swamps. Despite gear, however, I was soon quite damp and disspiritted. After finally reaching the road, it was another mile of trudging in sloshing shoes to get back to the car. | ||
