This is a relatively lush area, and the deep greens against the colorful rocks make for eye-popping views, especially in stormy weather. Many routes work. There used to be plane wreckage on the W side.

This is one of my most favorite peaks in the world. I have been to the summit 40 to 45 times, I have lost track. I first hiked it in deep powder in spring 1994. Since then I have snowshoed it many times, and then I learned how to ski. I have had some incredible powder days when I was the only one there with bottomless fluff. The views from the top are fantastic, you can see one of the best panoramas on earth. There is a little cave below the summit on the SE face. I have sat there to escape the wind in the middle of winter. The view from the cave is directly looking at Gannett Peak. In summer there are lots of Grizzlies around, so you have to be on alert when hiking. One of the advantages of all of the times I have been there in winter, no bears to surprise. The peaks close proximity to a road makes it such an appealing place to go.
