Left Nevada City at 6:15 and back before noon. Skied off the summit at about 10:00 just as the sun was beginning to soften the upper centimeter, so made for a quick morning sneak-away-from-work-trip.

Cute stone hut at the top. Headache-inducing phone towers at the true summit.

squishyLots of snow  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Mar 7, 2009

Tons of piled high snow from two weeks of good storms. We pulled off hwy 80 and really didn't know where we were going to hike. The avy conditions were moderate but at least we had biz the mountain guide along to keep it safe. He choose a route up to Peak 6986 from the frontage road, we went through the trees to avoid the dangerous looking face. Once on the ridge we stayed there till the summit. We drank a cheap bottle of Cab at the lookout/hut it was a short walk from there to the summit. Lots of dangerous ice and snow falling off the towers on the summit. The day was nothing but deep snow, we all had on MSR snowshoes and we were still post holing much of the time. It was a shame it was too deep to try out my plastic sled, I had brought it up there for a test, next time. There were lots of peaks nearby that look fun to climb, Devils Peak looked fun and we had a great view of Castle Peak, another we had climbed a few weeks ago. It's nice to explorer a new area and I'm finding more and more possible peaks along hwy 80 to check out...

Like other people, I couldn't find the old Jeep trail, so I just slogged up the SE face on snowshoes. The snow was good, but it was really warm going up. The summit was really cool. I climbd the medium sized radio tower for an added rush. Checked out the old lookout hut as well. Coming down was very fun, I just glided down the snow on my shoes. Went snowboarding afterwards. 3 hours, roundtrip.

What Matthew said below. It was chilly out to start and windy atop, but otherwise the weather was pretty nice. Trip Report

The last of three enjoyable days out around I-80 with Bob. We took the old jeep road/trail up, and followed the ridge almost all the way down. Nice views and spectacular weather--65° out when we got back to the car!

Date Climbed: Feb 12, 2006

It was very hot for Feb but I still used snowshoes the entire way. Great views but wondered if I was getting nuked by RF and microwaves. Got in some nice glissading in corn snow on the way down.

I had a fun time on this peak. The gate was locked, so i walked up the road looking for the jeep trail that leads to the Hut and then the summit. i guess i went pass the trail, so desided to head straight up the east face. With careful route finding you could avoid most of the bushes. Soon you are on the road and the top. Lots to see in the Northern Sierra and just a nice place to be. Find the good trail down on the south from the Hut.

I did this climb with some friends after the freak snowstorm in October. It was my first ascent of a peak with snow and I did not have snow shoes so I was post holeing a lot. Still a lot of fun.

An awesome day on snowshoes! We went after a series of huge storms (15 feet of snow) and were concerned of Avy's. No problems though. The weather was fantastic as were the views.
