Climbed twice, both in the summer. Beautiful scramble on granite-- you can make it as hard as you please. Centrally located for outstanding views on a clear day. Absolutely still in the summer. Except for the two bighorn I saw.

I was driving from Laughlin to Joshua Tree and decided to stop to burn a few calories and tag the summit. I thought I'd hump it to the summit and thought I did a great job in getting there in under an hour only to notice that the "true" summit was at least a half mile away via a difficult ridge! Arrrrgghhh!!! Someone placed a large wooden pole on the wrong peak. Oh well I resigned myself to the task at hand and trudged over to the "real" summit with quite a bit less spring in my step. Lots of rocks and boulders didn't make for a quick trip. Of course I ended up bushwacking my way down as well. I noticed some possible fifth class climbing in the area. Overall, a pretty hard little peak for me. Four hours car to car.

Matthew HollimanRoute Climbed: via wash and boulders from Sheephole Pass Date Climbed: Dec 12, 2005  Sucess!

The scrambling up the wash was surprisingly fun. But navigating through the huge talus to the summit was time-consuming and quite frustrating. I could see the summit a couple of hundred yards away to the east/northeast, and it seemed to take forever to actually weave my way through the maze of rocks to get there! Some surprisingly challenging scrambling required to negotiate the talus and slabs, up to class 3-4 in one or two places.

Found the usual class 2 route on the way down--much easier and quicker.

With Bob, the final day of our four-day tour of the Mojave desert.
