OJ LoennekerRe: Rainy Day

It never stops raining in the gorge. That's what is so cool about the place.

LunadogRainy Day  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Apr 12, 2009

Hiked up with my Dad. He made me wear my new backpack but it didn't bug me much. Some of the steps in the cliffy section are kinda high for me but I got up with no real problem. We came down the Hardy Trail way. I kicked my Dad's ass on this trail. I also thought the waterfalls were cool. I got the car seats really muddy too on the way back. That must have been why my Dad didn't let me have any of his McDonald's hamburgers on the way back. I got stupid kibble.

Are there any days that don't rain in the Gorge?

This is a good hike for the spring or on a morning when you can't get further from town.

Wet, muddy, rainy, windy and cold. Just how I like it! Plus that keeps the crowds away. Saw less than six people all day, and no one on the south side.

Lots of mud on the trail, a bit popular today! A great time with snow at the top, only saw one person on the Hardy Creek side of the loop. First summit for my new pup, loved it! :)

SubalpineSamSnow and more snow  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Feb 15, 2008

Gorgeous day today with lots of sun and nice scenic clouds. It even got up to nearly 50 degrees. Not bad for February! Above the first set of cliffs, it got pretty snowy. At the top there was anywhere from 2 to 4 feet of snow, depending on the angle and exposure. I managed to posthole up to my crotch. Swell. Went down the way I came up ("more difficult"), since it looked the the snow got a lot deeper heading north, and I was alone.
Note: Absolutely take the Little Beacon Rock trail. The little view through the trees to Beacon Rock and across the river are perfect.

YEMHam Mt. Trail  Sucess!

Climbed in Feb. with the wind hitting us hard at the summit. It was so strong we couldn't stand without bending at the knees. A great short day hike with cliffs, views and waterfalls. Everything the doctor ordered.

Went with 2 friends, made it up in 1.5 hrs. Once on the trail, the there were thick clouds above but many cleared as we approached the summit. (we did suffer a minor moment of defeat when we drove through a small section of rain right before reaching the trail head) Good views from the summit looking east up the gorge. We descended following the loop, heading north from the summit. We stopped at the waterfall on the way down to take some pictures, the rocks there made for a fun scrambling problem too.

A great quick walk through the mud and rain to the top to look out at the fog, around the backside and down the loop. A beautiful day back at the parking lot -ran across the street and up to the top of Beacon Rock to enjoy the sun!

The morning felt like a hot summer day, and the afternoon a cool, wet, spring day. There were plenty of people on the summit, despite the Easter holiday, but we found a perfect lunch perch 100 meters north on the ridge trail.

I've climbed Hamilton numerous times, the first time when a was a kid, the most recent in July of 2005 as a training hike. Still one of my favorite places in the gorge, lots of memories.

Very fun hike, beautiful day, mid 40's and almost no wind. Up in just over 2 hours, down in an hour. Next time i'll do the loop. Took both an altimeter and a GPS reading on the summit, altimeter was 2489, GPS 2450. Did not seem like 4 miles to me, but what do I know?

Started at 1230, went up the "More Difficult" route to the top, made that at 1:45. Great views at the top and rather windy which I didn't mind on a 90 degree plus day. Came down the Hardy Creek side with the mosquitoes after me most the way.

I was bored after getting out of class early this morning so I cruised up to the gorge to check out this mountain that I always thought looked enticing sitting behind beacon rock. Didnt pass anyone on the way up, passed a few people on the way down, was surprised to see people heading up in the evening.

For a trail that's 4 miles long with 2500 feet of elevation gain, this hike is surprisingly easy. I thought the side trip to the "pool of winds" was just as good as the views at the summit. My first hike on the Washington side of the gorge, I would have preferred to do this climb on a weekday as there were many, many people on the trail. Good Hike though.

Got to the TH at 7AM and we were the only car there. Made the summit at 9:30AM. When we got back to the parking lot is was almost full. Great weather with no clouds, but it was kinnda windy. This is now probably my favorite Gorge Hike.
