Up the Southwest ridge and down the central ridge. The ocotillo high on the mountain surprised me!

asmrzBeautiful March Day  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Mar 14, 2009

Penelope May and I spent the week rock climbing at J Tree. Kathleen Edwards joined us for Friday and Saturday. At the end of our trip, we hiked the Pinto Mountain from the Turkey Flat Backountry Board on Pinto Road. The day was cloudless, the desert floor was full of flowers and from the lower ridge, the views of Mt.San Jacinto and Mt. Gorgonio were wonderful. What a great day to be in Joshua Tree. This was a really nice hike, Kathy Wing thanks for the page and the info!

Went up the standard DPS ridge route and down the west wash. Nice day and nice views. I didn't see anyone apart from the parking area.

Kind of cloudy, but clear views from the top. Had the whole mountain--and basin it seemed like too!--all to myself. Very peaceful.

Yes, I am crazy for climbing this mountain in August. Maybe even a little suicidal! But what a great day. The temp was about 110 degrees F, the park road that goes past the mountain was closed because of flood damage, and the trail? What trail? So I was the only person around for many miles. In fact, I was the first person to sign the summit log in three months! I ran out of water on the way back and I could barely drive home because I was getting really dehydrated. I bowed to the creosote gods and prayed for rain, but to no avail. In the end, all the suffering was worth it for the awesome views and the beautiful rock formations in the surrounding washes.

It was a nice day out in Joshua Tree National Park. Althoug the view was hazy, the desert flowers were starting to bloom.
