mountaingazelleSouth Rim Loop  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Nov 11, 2009

Hiked to the South Rim after Emory Peak. Did the loop around the rim which had amazing views. I was impressed with the desolation of the area and was able to see far into Mexico.

Date Climbed: Nov 23, 2007

What an amazing variety of scenery along this loop. Was a bit hazy, so the South Rim views could have been better. Many trees were still in peak fall color, especially through Boot Canyon.

Date Climbed: Jan 5, 2007

The Laguna Meadow/Boot Canyon/Pinnacles Loop was an eye popping extravaganza of stunning views. But there are some wonderful pockets of nature along the way. An early start meant I caught Laguna Meadows as the sun began streaming through the grassy trail. I encountered a deer between the South and East rim, Boot Creek was running quite fast(this was December but a torrential rain storm hit earlier in the week). A must do, even if you decline the side trip to Emory peak.

Had to hike to south rim to reach all the unnamed 7000 ft. peaks in the park. The views are incredible. I took a break here that turned into a couple hours of sitting back and watching the peregrine falcons- they're fast!

strawdRoute Climbed: Laguna Meadow to SW, SE, and NE Rim Trails Date Climbed: July 24, 2005  Sucess!

Having hiked to the South Rim 3 times without being able to continue on the Southeast Rim Trail, because of peregrine falcon nesting considerations, we finally got our chance in July. We did see two falcons overhead, by the way. It was a spectacular day and you could see way into Mexico. Every century plant that was in bloom had humming birds darting to the flowers. Rock squirrels were also in abundance and we spotted deer, a rabbit, and several snakes and lizards. There was a trickle of water flowing in Boot Canyon as we left the Northeast Rim Trail and headed for the Pinnalces Trail and back to the Basin. The 14.4 miles took about 10 hours at our slack pace. It was only about 85 degrees and we drank pleanty of water.

I did this with the Boy Scouts way back in 1979. Great trip. I remember the warm wind blowing up The Rim and watching butterflies shoot upwards when they reached the edge.
