| This was a VERY enjoyable hike with some fun desert scrambling (3rd and 4th class) to a lofty summit with my beautiful wife Deb. A bit loose in some places but fun nonetheless. Deb and I spotted entries from Bob Burd, Matthew Holliman, Rick Kent, and Penelope May.....even Greg Vernon. The earliest entry goes back to the mid 50's (caution: the entires on the old summit log are decaying!). There is a summit entry that records an ascent that tackled the North Buttress, which involved 2 pitches of 4th, one pitch of 5th, and the remaining section to the summit was 3rd class (the actual start was not detailed enough in the description). | |

| After tagging Umpah the previous day, Mopah was a real treat with more Class 3 and 4 fun; no difficult sections encountered although many detachable holds no longer exist. Curious as to who tied a rap sling on a large ROCK; whoever uses it may also be using a hearse soon after. Great time in the desert! | |

| Lots of crumbly flow-banded rhyolite rock near tight notch -- if you try anything different (i.e. not cleaned by previous climbers), watch out; entire sheets of rock may exfoliate. Climbed with BW, NN, Dr Ed, and the Siberian. Took us perhaps 2 hrs plus change to do this peak, on peak top by ~8:30AM. It was just a mild day (mid 70's), but the sun was bright, and it felt warm and dry as there is virtually no shade. By the time we were down Umpah and out the southern wash (for variety), we were all a little thirsty. In other words, if you climb this in warmer weather, watch out. link: Mopah/Umpah/OldWoman | |

| What a good looking little mountain. The east face route was surprisingly enjoyable and aesthetic. Very short. Car-to-car'd Mopah and Umpah in around 6h20m. Good time. | |

| The peak looks very impressive from a distance--but perhaps even more impressive is how easy the usual route up the peak is. Only a short bit of third class is encountered. (The hype in the DPS guide about "most climbers will want a belay" is a bit overblown, IMO). The crux of the scramble was actually gaining the notch at the top of the chute/chimney just before the "class 3-4" move--but on the descent, we found that even this can by completely avoided by a ducked ledge on the right. A rewarding and enjoyable scramble nonetheless. One of my favourite desert peaks to date. | |

| The view was great of Umpah Point to the south, Castle Rock, the other Turtle Mountains, to the east the Colorado River and out into Arizona. Weather was clear, no wind and temperature in the upper 60's. We, Matt Haynes, John Paterson and I, climbed the East Face Route of Mopah which was a California Mountaineering Club trip. | |
