Mitchell Point

As usual, I failed to read the DPS info till I got back. I stayed right on the knife edge all the way, which was exciting, but not too safe. I'd jump across a gap, confident that I could grab a pinnacle of rock, only to have the pinnacle disintegrate in my hands. So the DPS recommendation to stay well S of the edge may be a better idea.

I climbed this peak based on Matthew H's strong recommendations. It was great. To help empathize, I sat in a cactus on the way down. My nylon shorts were torn, and I did the last 2000' of descent in my underwear.

Matthew HollimanRoute Climbed: Traverse from Edgar (ascent) / Cactus-filled gully (descent) Date Climbed: Dec 10, 2005  Sucess!

This peak was a mistake. Tedious route-finding from Edgar (there are a bunch of north-facing cliffs that you don't see from that peak, and you can waste a lot of time trying to make it through these if you guess wrong on how to bypass them)... and even more tedious hiking on the descent.

I made it down from the summit and into what we thought was the right descent gully before dark, but then the cactus--and my troubles--started. Descending this minefield of cacti, yucca, and brush by headlamp couldn't remotely be considered fun. I don't know exactly what kind of cacti were there--cholla perhaps?--but everytime I brushed against one, I'd have to take ten minutes to try and extract all the needles. (And I spent the next couple of days picking out all the ones I missed, too).

Perhaps the DPS-recommended route would be better. Or perhaps not.

2X. Great peak to do along with Edgar. Both times led by the Desert Peaks Section. Fine leadership, all volunteers. Fun people, all experienced climbers.

The traverse to Edgar takes some 3+ hours, with another 1,000+ feet gain, but a good way to bag both with a more efficient use of time. In 2002, we hiked in the dark for 3 hours, with terrible cactus and rocky ground. Lucky no one got really hurt. Another group had to bivvy. This is not a peak for the frail or casual. The views are good, but not great, for the effort.

There are short nature trails in the State Park which are worthwhile for study and some slight exercise.
