Regrettably, we didn't see CP's message to us, though we looked very hard.
This is a mainly class 1, marginal class 2 hike with about 5000' accumulated elevation gain over 7.5 miles. The trail is good and ramp-like, until one diverges up the hill NE of the peak onto a well-chosen herd path initially marked just with frequent cairns. An advantage of this trail is that a fairly normal, modest clearance vehicle (e.g. Subaru Outback) can drive up to the trailhead. To me, this seemed like a comfortable dayhike.
There are good campsites with water at 7200' (near start of trail, spur road downhill to S), and the trail is beautiful. We were on top by 10AM, when storm clouds began to build. |
