SageHawkHampton Creek Route  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 8, 2009

Long day hike from Hampton Creek trailhead. The first few miles of trail in the steep section are suffering from pack animal damage. It looks like Custer's army marched through there in a rainstorm. I was saddened to see this since on a previous hike back in the 90's the trail was pristine. Trail conditions aside, it's a beautiful hike. Hampton Creek was running full and clear with a beautiful wildflower display in the meadows above 10,000ft. There is an awesome bristlecone grove on the northeast side of the subsidiary peak just north of Moriah. A few lingering July snowbanks. Saw many eagles this day and several Elk on the table during my return from the peak. There are several fine campsites close to the trailhead and an abandoned garnet mine to explore as well. The round trip, trailhead to summit and back is approx. 16 miles, so be sure to start early.

Mount Moriah is one of my favorite peaks that I have done. I loved the peak and enjoyed every second of this hike.

DeanNW Ridge  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Oct 20, 2008

Made the summit on a beautiful autumn day with good friends Bob, Duane and Ken, who had made the trip down from Washington state. Loved the northwest ridge route and the bristlecones along the way. Views were amazing as the air had very little haze in it in most directions. See the NW route page for more info as it is right on if you would like to access the peak from the NW. The road up is high clearance but in decent shape.

This is a long day-hike. In the beginning, the trail is actually an old road, which once ran up to the pre-World War I
Hendrys Sawmill. You will find shade in a meadow near an
old sheepherders campsite. I saw a Golden eagle flying above
the meadow. Other than that, it's a truly lonely place.

A map of the route is here.

Regrettably, we didn't see CP's message to us, though we looked very hard.

This is a mainly class 1, marginal class 2 hike with about 5000' accumulated elevation gain over 7.5 miles. The trail is good and ramp-like, until one diverges up the hill NE of the peak onto a well-chosen herd path initially marked just with frequent cairns. An advantage of this trail is that a fairly normal, modest clearance vehicle (e.g. Subaru Outback) can drive up to the trailhead. To me, this seemed like a comfortable dayhike.

There are good campsites with water at 7200' (near start of trail, spur road downhill to S), and the trail is beautiful. We were on top by 10AM, when storm clouds began to build.

Nice hike. Short and easy. We wanted to hang out on the summit a bit, but a fast approaching storm chased us off.

dianejust to the table
Date Climbed: Sep 4, 2005

didn't summit the peak, hiked up to an area the locals with us called the table, big mesa a couple hundred feet below the peak with gnarly bristlecones. we wandered the table, napped in the sun, and turned back to our base camp below. there are great old birch trees in the region that basque shepards carved things in, sometimes the lonely shepards got a little risque in their carvings.

Good backpack. Love to return for more summit photos and to do the 4WD approach.
