We hiked up to the Timberline back country site and set up camp then decided to go on up Nakai before dinner. We went up the valley from our camp and climbed Nakai on the southeast side then looped around and back down the northern shoulder. It was steep tundra with some loose rocky areas, but a nice little peak. I'd taken some rice for our dinner and put it in a pot with water to soak while we were gone. I secured the lid in place with a very large rock...thinking it would keep the animals out. We returned to camp to find the pot licked clean. The next morning the culprits woke us up. Several elk were wandering around our tent and obviously had come back for breakfast. We had to shew them out of camp several times.

Nakai is a great winter hike/climb, albiet a tough one. the terrain around the area is some of the Parks most pristine. I really got the feeling I was in the middle nowhere!
