JoleeRoute Climbed: Tower Ridge Date Climbed: August 2003  Sucess!

First half of the climb was a fun simul climb (climbed with bthere). I thought the upper section was a little more difficult than 5.7 (and I was following) but in all fairness it is way up there. The descent was brutal and scary. It felt like we did 20 rappels, although we probably didn't do that much. The downclimb was sketchy and I still don't know if we descended the right route.

d_shorbRoute Climbed: tower 1 gully? Date Climbed: aug 03

this is the northern gully seen separating Tower1 from the rest of the mountain on the main page picture labeled "Tower2 and Tower 1." it was leaner than in that photo, and is accessed from a sweet 35-40ish degree couloir coming into the upper basin on the north side of Helen, i believe called the northwest couloir (which was an awesome snowboard descent). the guide book compares it to the Black ice, which i've not done, being alone probably made it feel more hardcore than it actually is, though, there was lots of rock fall, and variable conditions : some ice, some aeriated stuff you might use for a snow cone treat, and some mud covered rock. there were some fixed pins and webbing I found to rap on, though largely I just down climbed all the way from my high point at the notch. I'd love do the rock climb mentioned below. Tower 1's west side is big, and just to sit in that upper basin was awesome.

What an incredible route! We simul climbed up to the last few pitches. The 5.7 handcrack seemed hard sucking wind at 13k. I wish I had known the best descent before hand, too!
