An inch of snow fell on my tent overnight while I slept. The wind was howling. Kind of a daunting place to spend a cold, snowy night.

Not bad... little bit of ice on the trail. We didn't see anyone else on Roan High Knob though there was a fair number of people just north on the balds.

dwhikeRoan Loop  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Apr 9, 2006

A great early spring hike. Did it as part of a 12-mile "loop" along with Roan High Bluff and Grassy Ridge Bald. The trail was a bit tricky with a lot of ice on the trail. In wet weather much of the trail up from Carvers Gap doubles as a small stream, which when I went was frozen. There was also a small bit of snow in places near the summit from the 12"+ we had the week before. A nice hike, I love the northern feel of this mountain.

The east coast got dumped on over the weekend. Mt LeConte had 30+", Beech Mt ~18+" and I suspected Roan had a pile.On way to in-laws, I took an out of the way side trip to check out the snow. With a big dump many XC skiers head to Carvers Gap to loop up to Toll House Gap and back. I snowshoed up to the summit, running into 15-20 skiers. (I could have gone without but I hate marking up XC tracks with my boots.) The weather was really nice, temp about 25 but not a cloud in sky. I think the Roans got 2+ feet with this storm. On my way back to car I punched through up to my hip and my foot never hit the ground.

I took a side trip up Round Bald where I could see 50+ in every direction. A really beautiful day.

It was a very cold day and night (10 degrees at night) and windy. Made the summit and spent the night in the shelter. The shelter was very drafty and it snowed that night. Other than that, the hike was great. Wish there were more views.

It was a warm hazy early June day in the East. The Rhododendrons above 4,000 ft were in blume and the crowds did not seems to be too terribly thick.

We had the shelter and the summit to ourselves.

Went on to climb Roan High Bluff before returning.
