There was snow, a lot of snow. There was snow everywhere above the Totalphütte.

Bergeinsamkeit
Started from Douglasshütte and took the Austrian normal (eastern) route to Totalphütte and onwards to the summit. Up to the southern summit ridge there was good trafic on the route but here the Swiss route joined and we found ourselves enjoying Bergeinsamkeit (mountain solitude) together with some 50 other people.
Weather was absolutely perfect, so that Doufourspitze onm Monte Rosa - about 185km to the south-west could be seen. As we were early we took the hike through Gamsluggen to the Swiss side of Rätikon, then back through Gafalljoch to Douglasshütte. Wonderful views of Kirchlispitzen, Drusenfluh and Sulzfluh.

Beautiful views, tho crowded
Our group of 8 made the summit, the high point of our 7 day Raetikon trek. The walk up is not easy, there is some exposure, but its a walk. Same deal on the way down. Weather was excellent so all the easier. Crowded at the summit with perhaps 50 people up there (about 10am).

Lots of snow
A few days earlier, I was at the Schesaplanahütte, planning to traverse the mountain on my way to the Totalphütte. There was still a lot of snow left over from spring, and the hut warden at the Schesaplanahütte advised against the traverse, since the route markers nor trail would be visible. The weather took a turn for the worse, with rain and low clouds, so I first took a rest day, then hiked around the mountain to the Totalphüutte.
The next morning the weather was a bit better, so I went up with a couple of Germans. There was quite a lot of snow on the Totalp side as well, making it a bit more adventurous than a regular hike in the moutains. Fortunately, there were only two short sections where an unarrested fall would be dangerous, as there were rocks lower down. To boost their confidence, I demonstrated in a safe part how to arrest a fall, and then I rapidy glissaded down to show that when the terrain gets less steep and there are no rocks to bump into, falling isn't dangerous.
During the day, the weather kept improving. On the summit, we enjoyed some excellent views while the clouds moved in and out again.

over Mannheimer Hutte
Route taken from Brand upto the Oberzalim Hutte onto the Mannheimer Hutte and then over the Brand glacier to the summit. From there down to the Totalp Hutte and then the Douglas Hutte and back to Brand. Unfortunately low cloud prevented me from seeing the great views from the summit.
