Ellen and I climbed this fabulous mountain from the Sharkstooth TH. I was disappointed that the old access road referred to in my Paul Pixler book had been shut down. This resulted in using the Mancos Trail, which is in bad repair. Bushwhacking is required no matter what route you may navigate to the mountain, so we skipped the trail on our return. The mountain was great fun. We had a bluebird day and we were the only ones on top, or on the mountain, until we ran into a local couple during our descent, who knew of SP and refer to it routinely, and so they reckognized me as well. Great summit, fabulous view, fun scrambling, but be in the mood for loose rock galore, because that's what the La Platas (and the San Juans) are all about. Get around that and you'll really enjoy this mountain!

While visiting Mesa Verde National Park, we drove out to the trailhead for this peak. She hiked to the pass Sharkstooth Pass while I ventured up the slopes. It was steeper than it looked attaining the ridge. Beautiful weather all day.

Just perfect conditions for climbing Hesperus. I made it to the top and found no storms and not even many clouds nearby. I could have stayed on top for hours, as it didn't seem to storm much that day. This was my 3rd sacred mountain to climb this summer.

Beautiful climb. I can see Hesperus from my house and have finally climbed it. The weather was great until I regained West Mancos Trail. It hailed from there back. Total time 5.5 hours. Mosquitos were thick in timber around trail.

climbed Hesperus along with Lavender via the traverse, not recommended unless you have a high tolerance for loose talus! I left the West Mancos trail a little too early in the dark and had to traverse across a rock glacier to the proper gully. Steep climb. Now somebody needs to figure out which is higher: Hesperus or Lavender?

It was a cloudy day and spent most of the climb in the clouds. To cut a couple of hours off the approach... go right over the talis and make your way up the back slope. Great view at the top though, as always.

Jathan Cantu and buddy, Dan Spare, reached the summit in about 4 hours. Started out at Sharkstooth trailhead, but soon broke trail and headed up the grassy north side of the west ridge. We hiked down the scree/talus slope to make better time on the return. Great 13er! Columbines everywhere!
