the main attraction of my day, the 13er boreas. hiked the gentle west slopes with sarah, dominic and dwight after scooting up madonna dome, a local 12er. the winter winds made an appearence up high....and blew my mind toward thoughts of the utah desert.

Was able to drive almost 4 miles past the Boreas Pass winter closure gate. Hiked the rest of the way to the pass and climbed Boreas Mountain from there.

Date Climbed: Sep 28, 2008

Climbed solo with an out an back traverse to PT 12700B to the east and then on to "Madonna Dome" on the west side of the pass. Breezy and cool, but a nice clear morning. Lots of "leaf peepers" on the road out, slow drive with all the traffic!

I had this entire mountain to myself from the minute I left the parking lot at the summit of Boreas Pass. The wind lived up to its reputation, nearly knocking me off balance a few times. I loved the views, especially the up-close-and-personal view of Bald Mountain. Hiking partner: Solo.

A real quick jaunt. Great weather but definately a sharp chill in the wind. Kind of a lonely summit...

Climbed from Boreas Pass, with Bald Mtn. More of a winter climb than a fall climb, lots of snow, and a herd of Mountain Goats!

Holy smokes, I love irony as much as the next, but the wind on Boreas literally had me crawling near the saddle and the summit. Ridiculous conditions, but the view down to South Park is priceless.

We first attempted to climb this in June 2002, but were notified by personnel from the National Guard, wearing camo and driving a Hummer, that our planned climb was within Pike National Forest which had been deemed off-limits to backcountry recreation due to the extreme fire danger and the existing Hayman fire. So that day we instead climbed Bald Mtn. to the north, staying within the boudary of Arapahoe National Forest..

We returned in Sept., after the release of restrictions, and climbed up the autumn tundra and talus to the summit area where we met Boreas's namesake...40 to 50 mph winds from the north. Although chilly on the summit, there wasn't much early season snow and once back down 500 verticle feet, the winds abated and we continued back down, shedding the layers from above.

The summit register is under-used especially considering the views on top of South Park, the Mt. Evans group and the Ten Mile Range. A great summit, despite it's low rank among the thirteeners.
