It is a long hike via Wild Basin TH and you are definitely alone once you get past Ouzel Falls. I don't remember seeing anyone enroute. Very flat on the Continental Divide.
Birth of the Tooth to Tooth Traverse Date Climbed: Aug 5, 2006
Very interesting day. Had planned on traverse between Elk Tooth & Ogalalla but went crazy and continued on over "Ooh La La", "Red Deer Mountain" & Sawtooth Mountain. I coined it the tooth to tooth traverse.
Traversed from Elk Tooth to Sawtooth over this summit. The ridge from Elk Tooth to Ogalalla was fun for the descent to the saddle, but I found the ascent of Ogalallas east ridge to be very unpleasent. Tons of talus leading to a short but fun scramble to the summit. I finished with the upper portion of Dalkes Coulior. RT 7:20 from Coney Flats.
Traverse from Elks Tooth Date Climbed: Aug 13, 2006
A nice scramble from Elks Tooth and the St Vrain Basin. Views from the top are wonderful and worth the approach. Some decent class 3/4 rock on the ridge.
Total ascents = 2. First time from a camp in the middle St Vrain drainage via "Dalkes Couloir, descended via Buchanan Pass." 2nd time from Wild Basin via Ouzel Peak.
We climbed this from the West, camping in Hell Canyon. Also that day we did Cooper and Marten peaks. Amazing area, and on a summer weekend, three-day backpack, we saw not one other person. Hurray for the west side!
