GAHikerGirlA Bit of A Trick to Find the Summit....  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Oct 9, 2005

But it's possible with very detailed instructions regarding following the boundary trail. Much better hiked from north to south. Then take in Craggy Dome to the south.

e-docRoute Climbed: Boundary trail Date Climbed: April 17, 2001  Sucess!

Another dayhike on my quest for the South >6000. Five days prior I had been with my son up Gibbs Mt, clothed in shorts and a t-shirt. This day was cold and snowy.I parked on the parkway, at Black Mt Gap and ascended the old Boundary trail to Potato Knob. I followed the ridge to the towers on Clingmans Peak, to Gibbes and then to ranger station. Temp 19 degrees, wind 10-20 mph and blowing snow. Ascended Hallback then back to car on Buncombe Horse trail. What a weather change. This route is not maintained, tricky turns.

WoundedKneeRoute Climbed: Disused jeep trail from col with Clingman's Peak Date Climbed: October 29, 2005  Sucess!

I came up from the southwest side, past an abandoned building and another part-time academic residence (maintained by North Carolina State). I went up this peak on my way to Potato Knob from Mount Mitchell.

This follows the boundary between the NPS land and the state park, which makes the route finding a lot easier. There are a couple of stretches of cane, but the ranger at Steppes Gap indicated that they were contracted to "clean up" the trail.

CortezRoute Climbed: Stepps Gap Date Climbed: June 3, 2005  Sucess!

This was a relatively easy hike, although there are some tricky route finding sections. The fog made the hike through the dense balsam forest abit challenging as it got thicker through the day.
