ProterraA kid's introduction to mountain hiking  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 28, 2008

Got a call from a friend of mine, who got utterly tired of her 17-year old son sitting in front of the PC for the whole summer vacation and literally begging me to take her son on a trip somewhere. I figured the Cairngorms would've been a much better introduction to Scotland than the Nevis Range for someone who's never seen mountains before, and I decided to go up to Cairn Gorm; if it all turned to be too much, we could still take the funicular down and call it a day. Fortunately, I had underestimated his stamina and me managed to take in MacDui as well, unfortunately not before my sweet girlfriend decided to run down scree on her flipflops and took a pretty nasty fall, resulting in the removal of a little piece of Ben Macdui from underneath her knee cap a month later in Poland...

Enjoyed a long day doing Ben Macdui including a flirt with the remaining snow. A good test of zero vis navigation too, it works!

Little_MoleFrom Linn of Dee  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jun 1, 1995

The route started at Linn of Dee and goes via Carn Crom and Derry Cairngorm to Ben MacDui. The descend goes to Carn a'Mhaim and then back to Linn of Dee. A fine day: about 30 km and 13 hours.

Not to forget that since that day I know how deep and cold scottish rivers are. Past Carn a'Mhaim we stayed to the right of the Luibeg Burn cause we didn't find a good passage. That went fine until we came to a large fence crossing the way and the river. Going back? Never!! My girlfriend climbed Indiana-Jones-alike along the fence and I pulled out my shoes and went through the river. I can tell you, it was REALLY cold ...
On the other side my trousers were wet because of the strong current. So I walked the last 10 kilometers or so wearing the woolen panty hose of my girlfriend. Thank God it wasn't pink ...

tphubbardA couple of times  Sucess!

Climbed it twice, once with my Dad on a lovely September day in 1996 from Braemar and also in October 2004 alone on a great day but with quite a lot of snow then descended to the Lairig Grruh and camped in a blizzard. No sign of the big grey man either time!

KNEEPCairn Gorm - Cairn Gorm plateau - Ben Mac Dui  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Nov 6, 2006

Arrived late on saturday and managed to reach the summit of Cairngorm just before dark. Slept in my car and left early the next day to retrace my steps and continue to Ben Macdui. Sadly the clouds reached its summit some 15 minutes before I did. Got blown over a couple of times, and it was quite cold, but I was alone on the plateau the whole time! Nice day out.

Rained and rained and rained, no visibility at all. I'll have to do it again on a sunny day.

mountainmanjohnDone the Dui  Sucess!
Date Climbed: May 16, 2006

Had a long day out. Started at the Corrie nan lochan and found one of the last remaining snow routes, from the lochan to the rim of the cliffs on consolidated snow. Once on the top we were confronted with an almost zero visibilty treck accross grass and snowfields. Some real attention to the compass here!
We arrived at the summit vey pleasrd with ourselves, and after a short snack, continued our practice of routefinding, and found Cairngorm, now in breaking cloud. Fab day for Mark and myself.

BermoRoute Climbed: Cairn Gorm ski centre - Cairn Gorm plateau - Ben Mac Dui Date Climbed: January 2002

Although this is a hairy story, I still recommend a winter ascent of Ben Mac Dui.

Started out on a Saturday morning taking the bus from Aviemore to the Cairn Gorm ski station. Stormy conditions were forecast, with very high winds. There was little or no snow in Aviemore, but it lay thick at the ski station. We began walking but didn't go to the summit of Cairn Gorm itself. Instead we followed a line of cairns around the mountain to the Cairn Gorm plateau. It was very cloudy, and soon we were almost in whiteout conditions even though there was no snow falling. Crossed the plateau using compass and map but there was nothing to take a bearing from. No rocks came up through the snow and there was no horizon visible, just a greyish white mass in all directions. The GPS was needed to get our position on the map. After a couple of hours, we finally got to the summit of Ben Mac Dui, but our exuberence was dampened by the rising wind and fading light. It was 4 pm, and we decided to camp about 50 m down from the summit on the lee-side of the mountain, in the shelter of a large boulder.

We piled up walls of snow to make wind blocks. This would save the tent, but we were still feeling the effects of the savage gusts which swirled around the boulder and over the walls hitting the tent from all directions. The wind strengthened relentlessly all night. Some gusts were so strong that tiny flakes of snow were being forced through the flysheet and belly of the tent and were falling onto our sleeping bags. I've never heard of that. We had to scream at each other to be heard. I tried sticking my head out the tent, but couldn't even open my eyes in the blizzard. We stayed in that spot for two nights. Scotland was suffering its worst storm in years, trees were being blown down in Glasgow. 2 foot of snow fell around our tent in 36 hours, and gusts of over 120 mph were recorded at the Cairn Gorm weather station. We woke up after our second night to the sound of pure silence. Relief at last. We got out of what was now a hole in the ground with our tent in it. The snow walls we built were buried. Luckily, when we stepped onto the new snow, we did not sink in, the crampons just bit into the icy surface. We lost some gear entombed in the snow and ice, but that was ok. We didn't expect we would need our snow shovel again. With our ice axes we hacked out the tent and rucksacks. We made our way back to the summit of Ben Mac Dui, and from there back to the Cairn Gorm ski station.

To cap it off we read in the Scotsman the next day about a major mountain rescue effort to save a man who was holed up in a stone bothy in the Cairn Gorms during the storm. The bothy was in a valley, over 3,000 ft below us!
