YEMTraverse from the Chinook Trail  Sucess!

We climbed Lil Baldy up the north and down the south after Silver Star. A worthy side trip along with the Indian Pit Ridge.

Brian JenkinsOvergrown Mess  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 29, 2007

What I thought would be a nice day was just an overcast, cloudy chilly one and the trail was quite overgrown. Worked my way along the old road part to the end and then down into the plant-choked trail. The trail beneath Bluff Mountain's cliffs is neat but salmonberry and some other thorny thing made it tiresome. Found the side trail to the summit from the wooded saddle. Up to the summit with no problems. Was going for Bluff on the return as it looked like open slopes to the right of the ridge but it turned out to be chest-high berry bushes and brambles. I was near the top but got sick of fighting through the shrubs. I had to get back to Portland in 3 hours and I had no idea how much longer it was going to take me to tunnel through the thickets so I turned back. I just barreled through most of the mess going back down, headed right too soon and it got way steep so more fighting back the other way. I tore my shins to shreds on the mess. Finally made it back to the trail and then ran most of the way back.

I did make it back to Portland in time for my appointment and decided I would go back to tag Bluff later in the season when the undergrowth dies away, possibly as a snowshoe.

Date Climbed: May 29, 2007

With my son. Great views, totally clear skies. Started at 5:45 pm, summit at 7:15, started back down at 7:25, to the car at 8:55. Stopped for many pictures on the way back. Very warm day, especially when out of the wind. Winds of 30-40 mph on the summit, the rock pit was convienent, I see why it was built. Was planning on tagging Bluff on the way back, but ran out of time. Will be back to do a traverse from this trailhead down to the Silver Star trailhead, tagging Bluff, Baldy and Silver Star.

I hiked to the top with two of my buddies way back when. The pit on the summit was a great spot for a break, and the view was incredible, like it is from most summits in the Silver Star/ Lookout Mt area. Hopefully I'll get to return home someday! A highly recommended side trip.

Don NelsenRoute Climbed: Chinook Trail from the east, then bushwhack Date Climbed: Sept 1, 2005  Sucess!

Little Baldy is prominently visible from east Portland locations and its symetry and barren appearance is striking. Finally got up there to take a closer look on this super nice and warm late summer day.

After a bushwack down from Bluff Mountain, I followed the Chinook Trail to the junction with the old trail(I like the "petite cairn" marking the junction), and followed it to the slopes of Little Baldy. Pretty easy scramble to the top. I was surprised to find an excellent wind shelter on the summit. It made for a great place to enjoy a refrehing beverage. Very fun peak and very close to Portland. Nice view form Jefferson to Rainier.
