wyopeakMikesummit register

I hiked up to this summit after going to the top of San G via the Vivian Creek trail in the late 1980's. I remember what a great view it was. The register on top had some entries from the 1970's. I still wonder if my name is still in that register. I really liked hiking across Tosh's Tarn.

DebTraverse from Bighorn  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 27, 2009

Ran along the ridge of Bighorn down to the tarn and picked up the trail for Dragon's Head. Short stay on summit in order to make scurry tracks back to trailhead. Opted to X-country straight to Vivian Creek trail then ran most of the way out. Made a quick exit for sure! Interesting peak with box chained to dead tree like a bad dog.

Part of a San G. and Bighorn hat trick. Dragon's Head, I must say, was the most interesting of the three.

skottyGood looking peak  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 5, 2007

Nice prominence and jagged face. One of the best lookin peaks in the range and a fun hike.

If coming from the Vivian Creek trail, traverse the bowl at about 10,700 ft instead of dropping down to The Tarn from San Gorgonio. The off-trail is pretty clear and saves you about 700 ft.

Did as part of a sierra club backpack. Scary peak to look at, but not too bad once you get there.

Did Bighorn as well that day, met some of the South Bay Sierra Club hikers on the trail, whom I hiked with.

Mountain ImpulseRoute Climbed: West Slope from Mt. San G. Date Climbed: Aug. 19, 2006

Went up Vivian Creek Trail to summit of San Gorgonio. Then dropped down Gorgonio's south face, across the Tarn (10,600') and headed left for the summit of Big Horn (10,997'). Then, back down to the Tarn and traversed upward westerly to a saddle below Dragons Head. From the saddle, it was a 10 minute climb up the sharp narrow ridge to the summit. Amazed to find a couple of registers with entries from the '70's. We descended across a small creek back toward the Vivian Creek Trail and picked up that trail about a mile above the "look out" point.

mdostbyRoute Climbed: West Slope, From Vivian Creek: Feb. 26th, 2006  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Feb 26, 2006

Hiked at a moderate pace up to High Creek Camp. The slope above High Creek Camp was pretty icy so I put on crampons. Once at the top of the ridge the crampons came off and after about 5 or 10 minutes I left the trail and dropped down into a drainage before heading up the west slope of Dragons Head. The west slope is fairly steep and it was basicly a sheet of clear hard water ice. Made the summit and was surprised to see that the last person who signed the log was my good friend Miguel back in November. I guess not many people climb this peak. The log book dates back to the early '70s and it's only half full. Decended the less steep northwest slope, following the drainage back to where I originally dropped in from the trail. Nice day, no wind and pretty warm.

forjanRoute Climbed: From Vivian Creek Date Climbed: November 5, 2005  Sucess!

Started at 8:36am from the Vivian Creek trailhead. Didn't take much water and so went a slower pace than usual. Left the main trail around 10,200' (this is 10-15 minutes after reaching the 10,000-foot ridge saddle where you see first see the Dragon's Head). Dropped down 200 feet to the small creek below and went up the West Slope of Dragon's Head. Reached the summit at 12:56pm. Had lunch and then headed to San Gorgonio's summit via the south slope. Descended via the main Vivian Creek trail down to the car. A nice day out in the local mountains.

KathyWRoute Climbed: From Fish Creek Date Climbed: August 13, 2005  Sucess!

We hiked to Dragons Head from Fish Creek Trailhead. Left the trail at 11,000 feet and crossed The Tarn to Dragons Head. From Dragons Head we hiked over to the summit of Mount San Gorgonio and then took a chute down to pick up the trail near Mine Shaft Saddle.
