Steve LarsonFrom Quail Springs  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Oct 9, 2009

Started with the idea of Johnny Lang Cyn, but it was too roundabout, so I just struck off cross country straight for the peak. Nice exercise in route finding and map reading, though you really can't get very lost. For the first time in a very long time, I didn't see a soul anywhere on the hike. Got in a few laps up Trashcan Rock with the new climbing shoes afterward.

Luciano136Johnny Lang Canyon  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Mar 28, 2009

Parked near the rock outcrop as described on SP. We kind of lost the wash a bit on the way in and took a shortcut over a hill and met back up with the wash. Once we climbed out of the canyon, it looks like the peak is right there but it's still a long haul. Fun day nonetheless with great views of Jacinto and San Gorgonio.

phydeuxA nice walk into the JTNP backcountry  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Mar 13, 2009

Climbed it (or should I say 'hiked it?') on Friday the 13th by the Johnny Lang Route, following the scant directions in Zdon's "Desert Summits". Spectacular day, great views all around. Only two other parties had hiked it so far this year. Great diversion from the hustle-and-bustle of JTNP's more common rock climbing activities.

Went up via the CA Hiking + Riding Trail. Saw a deer near the top. Great view, but I couldn't stay long due to brutal wind that day.

sierramtngoatRoute Climbed: south west wash  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Dec 31, 2006

Climbed with Maria on New Years Eve. I believe that you would save an hour+ on the ascent if you start at Cap Rock and hike west towards the peak up the most major wash; this is roughly the way we exited and saved a lot of time this way; the trail is very roundabout. We climbed the wash that goes straight up to the summit, maybe class 2+ in a few parts; the true summit is the wide rounded one on the right, not the sharp one(s) on the left. Nice marble steps in the creek bed! We descended the NW ridge.

Second attempt, this time from directly east, to keep the directions simple--but lots of up and down.

Date Climbed: Oct 31, 1998

My 1st desert peak. Learned that I need a bit more than 1 liter of water for such a hike... Went up the north west canyon (an interesting scramble) and back to our camp via Johny Lang Canyon. Lost my camera at one point where we left the canyon for the ridge - please drop me a line if you find it!

Date Climbed: May 27, 2006

My friends and I hiked the California Hiking and Riding Trail west from the main road before turning north in Juniper Flats. After losing the trail we continued northeast to a cairn that sits below the base of the ascent trail. The ascent is a moderate Class II with some Class III sections, especially near the end. After a quick scramble and a meeting with a rattlesnake while I was on point, we were atop the mountain. What an awesome view!

The only man on the mountain. Cold and windy with incredible vistas. Due to fading daylight, I had to turn back short of the summit.

Very cold and very windy with some fresh snow still on the top. A beautiful hike with an awesome view at the finish. And I got paid to do it! I love working for the NPS!!

Been a while, we were hit by rain showers, saw mt. goat carcasses, explored plane wreckage, and had a good hike to great views.
