| Have been on the summit of this lovely mountain more times than I care to remember! So it's great to see it appear on Summit Post. My August 2004 walk to the summit was my first "big" effort after a minor cardiac problem in March 2004, (now long since gone it seems). One of the quieter routes, until near the summit when the Goetheweg route is joined.
In October I did the full height, ie starting at Illsenburg which gives a height gain of around 900m, on fairly quiet tracks. The large crowds usually come from the other side. On this day the wind was around 120 km/h at the top in heavy rain, (I loved it), but such is the weather that you can experience at the top the Storm Warning lights were not even flashing that day!
I did fail to summit it in March this year, starting in Wernigerode, (another 900m height gain route), as I had left my snow shoes at home, and higher up the snow was just too deep in places for normal hiking. |
