Date Climbed: Jun 8, 2008

Spent way too much time in the canyon before I found the route up.

Have been up several times, but most memorable was with Tanya a couple years ago and also with the SAR Team in the winter about 10 years ago.

We took a side trip to the summit of Mountain of the Sun and then finished the route by doing Lodge Canyon. Fun trip. Great views from the top. I always like hiking in that area of the park.

MoapaPkBo's ramp  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Apr 22, 2007

Left Lodge (Employee) Canyon on the ramp described by Bo Beck & Tanya. While not as exciting as CP's exit, it is class 2 to the Twin Brothers - MOS saddle. The way we took from there was a little non-standard, and never seemed worse than 3+ (but see comments below).

We had great weather for MOS, and were on top by 9:15 AM, about 2h 12m. The fast pace was greatly aided by a GPS track from Day Hiker -- no navigation issues.

However, the next day we were shut out of (Zion) Bridge, by sleet storms. We turned back at the top of the summit cone ramp, when it became impossible to stand on the water-sheeting, lichen-covered rock. The wet sandstone would simply crumble. The two days gave a good picture of the vast difference rain and snow can make for the Zion class 4 climbs. [Made it to Bridge 5 mo. later!]

Saw lots of mountain lion tracks, some very fresh, which underlined reasons for hiking with partners in Zion.

I always thought that Mountain of the Sun was such a beautiful peak. It has a sheer cliff down its west face when viewed from the valley. Climbed up the east face route. The ramp leading up to the col had a lot more exposure than I thought but was easy to ascend. We climbed up slabs on the upper part of the mountain and then loose rock near the top. It was a very aesthetic climb that had a little bit of everything. I enjoyed the route-finding, scenery, and scrambling very much.

DonnieBExploratory NW of 4th class route  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Nov 26, 2005

Fun day in the sun with Matthew and saw a bunch of Bighorn sheep as a bonus on the way in.

New? route starts farther NW of original 4th class route and we were able to keep it mostly around 3rd class and is courtesy cairned for future ascent parties. We came across 1st sign of cairns where route starts up steep gully on N side of MOS. This entrance is up narrow Maewest slot that dumps into Employee / merge right LUC before getting to tech part of canyon to a tree leading to short friction onto ledges (may be an easy workaround to this also but didnt look)

Take the N. or Left gully at base ( S. gully gets tech just below ridgeline and is sandy and steep and has a large obvious cleaver crack for a landmark)

*MOS could also use a new container and fresh book! (hint hint!) ;-)

Matthew HollimanRoute Climbed: East Face via Employee Canyon Date Climbed: Nov 26, 2005  Sucess!

Climbed with Donnie (below). We ended up following a rib/ridge that eventually led to a point above the Mountain of the Sun-Twin Bros col, and might avoid the 4th class climbing reportedly needed to gain the summit from the col. Too little time to tag Twin Brothers as well, so that'll have to wait for a future visit. I wish I'd checked the beta for Employee Canyon beforehand--that would make for a fun descent.

Saw some bighorns on the way in. Lots of interesting and cool scrambling on this one, and some great views too. Fun.

Day 9 of my southern NV/UT tour. After dinner at JB's in Hurricane (excellent), drove back to Vegas in some impressive winds, hitting a truly enormous (4ft diameter?) tumbleweed at 85 mph en route. Good times.

Family (read wife and dog) went as far as the end of the canyon with me. I had planned a solo rappel descent behind Zion Lodge, but enjoyed the family outing instead. We started off with a Desert Big Horn, ever bit as large as our Canadian Big Horns, but much shier and saw a large owl in the canyon and a tarantula on descent (photo added). Also two sheep carcasses, bedded down by a cat do doubt, in the canyon (photo added). I ascended and descended different routes at the finish. Saw a rap station near the summit, but no need for it. Cheers
