Climbed East Northgate before North Guardian Angel and West Northgate afterwards. Both are short, easy scrambles.

Missed a Sat morning rendezvous with Courtney when I overslept in my car (amazing rain along I-15 on the way--I couldn't drive any more than 30mph with any degree of safety, so I pulled over to sleep), then terrible rain around Zion meant I should look elsewhere. Drove down to the Grand Canyon, and weather there was even worse, with snow in the forecast too. So I drove back to Zion, and found the skies had cleared by the afternoon. I had a couple of hours of daylight, so I headed up to Northgate Peaks to try and salvage something from the day.

I tried West Northgate Peak, but the rock there was still wet from the rain and not climbable. The trail up East Northgate Peak was doable, and I was treated to some spectacular views of the Guardian Angels and the peaks around the Zion Canyon rim. I'll have to go back for West Northgate Peak another time, when the rock's dry.

West Northgate Peak - North Face: The mountain resembles Checkboard Mesa with a similiar series of ledges and patterns. I scrambled up the north ridge to the top.

East Northgate Peak - North Slope: I hiked down from Northgate Peaks Overlook to the base of the mountain. This one was easier to climb than West Northgate Peak.

The scrambling was fun and some of the steps were crumbly. Great views- nice escape from the lower Zion Valley

West Northgate Peak: Ascended the south face to the summit, then descended the east face until it cliffed out not too far from the bottom. Rather than go for the dicey rappel off a 2" thick shrub that I dreamt up, we traversed a bit to the south and then picked our way down the southeast face. (May 2005)

East Northgate Peak: Enjoyed a short class 3 slab line up the north slope. Once on the summit, I discovered a use trail that heads down the north slope further to the east than my ascent line. I cruised down the steep use trail. (Oct 2005)
