chilkootIsland in the sky  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Oct 4, 2009

Climbed out of the fog on CVR and up to the summit where we had some fine views of the Crockers and Bigelows sticking up above the clouds. Also climbed in August '98 on my AT thru-hike.

Dropped packs and went up with cameras and water bottles. Great views if you ignore the radio tower. With one of the guys in my group, I ran up the trail from the AT to the summit. Lots of fun.

TahawusSugarloaf  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jul 15, 2008

Climbed with Spaulding via the Appalachian Trail from Caribou Valley Road. Had a blast ascenting this really rugged section of the Appalachian Trail that runs along the rim of the Sugarloaf Cirque. Great views of the entrie Rangeley-Stratton region from the summit. Only saw a couple people, most of which were thru-hikers, during the whole day.

I had a great view of this mountain when I lived at Horns Pond. However, I only hiked up it once using the ski trails.

Easy side hike off the Appalachian Trail. Nice to see Sugarloaf Cirque, a view you don't get from anywhere at the ski resort.

Uneventful climb, somewhat tiring with overnight pack. Those double-diamonds are steep! Snow essentially gone from ski slopes.

Watch for a Spaulding page coming soon...

SheazulaBush wack  Sucess!

Took a trip up the loaf with some friends and made our own trail past the Salsa Shack on the backside, we had to bushwack up some steep shit. Great day though. Also hiked it this past winter at night for a full moon ride down the mountain. Also almost got lost up there this past august on my ME AT trek, its amazing how the clouds just roll in and something so familiar seems like a lost world, now I know how Don Fendler felt on Ktaadn.

woodstriderRoute Climbed: Spur trail off of AT Date Climbed: Aug 26, 1998  Sucess!

Only a short .5 mile or so hike off of the AT, yet almost no thru-hikers will take a side trip. But I was no thru-hiker and I took the side trip. I wasn't very impressed.

CatamountRoute Climbed: Caribou Valley Road walk to Appalachian Trail; ski trail descent Date Climbed: March 20, 1996

What a great day it was. One day after swimming through chest high snow to the top of Old Speck, I had the pleasure of climbing to the top of Maine's second highest massif during a virtual blizzard!

As Caribou Valley Road is not maintained in winter, I had to walk the 4.5 miles to the Appalachian Trail crossing after parking along State Route 27. The trail was difficult to follow as no one had been through recently and upon reaching the summit and the top of the ski area, I was not surprised to find skiing had been shut down for the day due to high winds and heavy snow. I descended right down the middle of some ski trails and worked my way back to my truck.

Revisited the slopes of Sugarloaf some years later while climbing Spaulding Mountain.
