FarNorCalQuick hike  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 28, 2009

On my way back to Nor. Cal. from Medford and decided to hike it. Parked at the ski area and hiked the maintenance road to the summit. I'll have to try the 'Marathon Route' that Dennis Poulin described as I watched a great mountain bike race down that route to Lithia Park. Great sunset.

Hiked up from the ski area on the maintenance road. Good views of the area. Too smoggy to see Mt McLaughlin, but Shasta was out.

Was skiing with freinds (Lived in Grants Pass at the time), took a break and hiked up the road to the summit. Didnt think anything about it until I read Larry"s account(cascadetravler). Overcast, no view this day.

Tagged this on the way home from the Tahoe area. Nice views from the summit. What's up with the volleyball? Weird, wild stuff.

DeanHazy day  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 30, 2006

I hiked up from the picnic area but ended up going through some thick brush that made the going tough. True, I could have driven up the road but I needed the exercise. I scared out a huge buck deer that had been hiding in the brush and then I made my way across the rocky ridge over to the summit area. It was so hazy I couldn't see much of anything, not even Mt. Shasta.

Got bored, so I hiked up ski runs on Mt Ashland from ski area parking lot. There's a road to the top from the opposite side.

Well graded road to summit, any car can make it. At last road junction (on topo, at 7400') parking for many cars. The last 200 yds had a "closed" sign on it, yet the gate was open. We parked and walked up. Two workers were on the radio tower. When they saw me, one announced I had to leave, because they were spraying "toxic substances". They were, however, only repainting the tower. Neither wore a mask, either. As I was about 50 yds from them, and only a minute walk from the summit, I told them I'd be quick, and went anyway (which upset one of them).

The peak has a major area overlap on the Calif 50 finest completion map (see cohp.org, go to prominence section).

It is a quick drive from I-5. The whole detour took little over an hour.

Climbed Mount Ashland with my wife. Or, rather we hiked it. Not much as far as climbing goes, but the views were very beautiful. Much better than I was expecting. Worthwhile summit.
