Adams had received high levels of snow this winter.
May 30, 2006 – Approach
Drive FR23 to mile 31 (impassable beyond). 12:15pm. Hike road to 32, turn into woods, pass Lake Tahk Tahk, to FR 2329 to trailhead 112. Trail not obvious in snow covered condition – hiked via compass to establish camp at terminal moraine of Adams Glacier around 6300’, at 5:15 pm (5 hours total). For future reference: camp convenient for minimizing full-load hiking/approach, but too far from base of route, making for a long summit day. Great visibility, full view of Adams plus St. Helens and Rainier. No wind, precipitation. Sleep at 8pm.
May 31, 2006 – Summit Push
Alpine start at 2:15pm. Clear skies. 2.25 miles up 2700’ further approach to the base of the steep Adams Glacier at 9000’ took several hours. Climb up the sustained 40-50 degree snow and ice terrain, navigating around open crevasses and the bergschrund and crossing others well-bridged.
Very heavy winds (~90 MPH gusts) swept the summit plateau for the last 600’ gain over ½ mile portion. Leader slips into steam vent up to shoulders, and self-extracts. On summit at 12:32pm. View of Mt. Hood.
Clouds move in immediately reducing visibility upon descent. Easily find top of North Ridge (AKA North Cleaver), a rocky/mixed descent route, cross the entire width of the bottom of the Adams glacier and a long descent back to camp, ending the day at 6:30 pm. A 16-hour summit day.
June 1, 2006 – Down and Out
Break camp and on trail at 9:30 am. Back to vehicle around 1pm. |
