I'de been to the top of Bierstadt 3 times before to look down the ridge and say nah. I was missing out. This was a very fun and not so hard scramble.

Haliku and I slept on the pass and got an early start. The climb was really fun and we had great weather.

This was my 1st Class 3 route and the beginning of my mountaineering addiction. After boring Bierstadt, The Sawtooth is a fun climb. Just make sure you know how to get back to your car!

argothorEvans from Bierstadt via the Sawtooth  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 18, 1998

Started up Bierstadt by myself, but at the summit I meet up with two other guys who were going to cross over the Sawtooth, so I joined up with them for what turned out to be a real fun traverse. We got to Evans' summit but didn't stick around because there were some threatening clouds building off to the west. We headed back down to Guanella Pass by heading down the western slopes between Evans and Spalding. We had to fight our way through the willows for there was no trail. We got to our cars just in time for the heavens to let loose buckets of rain. I don't think I have ever seen it rain so hard.

This was my first successful traverse of the Sawtooth. I got turned back by weather a couple times. I continued on to Evans and returned to Guanella Pass. I returned to the Sawtooth on 7-18-98, 7-29-00 & 7-16-05.

Hiking this was good, liked Kelso ridge better. Bierstadt-Sawtooth-Evans-Willows route kinda sucks on the way down - got a bit off-route in the willows.

First class 3 route, not much scrambling but some interesting exposure on the ledges across the Sawtooth. Fun day.

Good times. I agree, [Great class 3 hike!!!]. Bierstadt's west slope route was a quick summit. The Sawtooth Ridge was my favorite part of this Bierstadt & Evans Combo. Keeping the trail is difficult when traversing the ridge from the east to the west sides. The weather was marginal that day. Check out my pics. I recomend this combination for a good all day hike! (9.7 miles)

Great route and fun scrambling on the Sawtooth! Liked the exposure but hated the willows on the way down!
