| This was supposed to be a snowshoe venture, but the late fall meant that it was a walk in the snow and rock etc.. Sharon (wife), Mike and I parked clockwise from Watchman, walked up Watchman, went a ways back towards the Rim Village, doubled back to and past the car, walked around but not up Hillman, then walked another mile or so along the rim before returning to the car. Very light effort, seems almost strange to call it a summit. Nice views of Wizard Island, Thielson, Bailey and the Caldera. After being very familiar with the area in the early sixties, I was astonished at how perspective changes--never thought of it as "inside a classic Cascade stratovolcano" as a kid. Beautiful sky day. Will post pics when I can scan them. May have been the Saturday after the given date. |
