Beautiful approach trail with Geneva and Little Gem Lakes along the way and lots of wildflowers too. Steep and loose rock mostly once you're on the actual mountain. Nearly 5:40 to reach summit and only 3:20 back as I was racing against storm from the West.

I've hiked about a dozen 14ers and I tend to avoid the standard trail and aim for the more challenging routes. The west face of Snowmass is undoubtedly the hardest hike I've ever done -- absolutely exhausting both mentally and physically. You'll yearn for solid ground as you struggle your way up & down the last mile (2,300 feet elevation gain).

That being said, the sense of accomplishment (and the views) were amazing and I plan on hitting this route again during the summer of 2009. :-)
