Helon taylor, however very pretty it is...just goes on and on and on after a long hike up.

TMFStormy

Crossed the Edge in moderate sleet and rain; seemed as if we were the only ones on the ridge- descended Helon Taylor trail

Nice climbing, nice route. Terminus of AT Trail. Between people ending their hike and those meeting them there, Katahdin Summit had about 100 people. Holy Crap! Used the route as recon for winter ascent of main face; but Rangers were such ****wads that we were totally turned off by the area vibe.... maybe things have changed since?

We successfully came up Helon Taylor but my dad and my brother chickened out on Knife Edge so we had to go Down Dudley and up Saddle : (

I forget the exact date. I anxiously crossed the knife-edge in dubious weather and was down to Chimney Pond by 11:00AM.

My first stab at real class 3 terrain, and what fun it was! Used Cathedral Ridge as the ascent route and Knife Edge as the descent. A blast both up an down...my only complain would be the endless slog back down to Roaring Brook on the Helon Taylor trail. My knees were killing me!

Finally! Made it back to Maine to do the Knife Edge. Had just done the Presidential Traverse in New Hampshire and then drove to Katahdin with Flanders on our annual hiking trip. Hiked in to Chimney Pond the day before, camped in one of the lean-tos (very nice). Clouds hung around, danced on top of, and obscured the top few hundered feet until we were half way up the Dudley Trail which is fun itself. Got to Pamola Peak and then did the notch downclimb and climb. Then enjoyed sunny skies as we picked our way along the Knife Edge. Super fun. hung out a while at the summit, then descended the Saddle Trail where we got our gear and then hiked out to Roaring Brook where we camped that night. What a fun climb and great weather day.
