asmrzSpectacular hike!
Date Climbed: Aug 28, 2009

As climbers, we sometimes don't realize how beautiful it is to just hike through our much loved Sierra. Penelope May and I spent the most wonderful time reminiscing about old climbs and enjoying the scenery while hiking the JMT all the way from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney. We mailed our food to Red's Meadow, The Muir Trail Ranch and self supplied ourselves over Taboose Pass. It was unforgetable (if strenuous) hike over the most spectacular landscape to be found anywhere. BTW, Thank you Doug Thompson (Whitney Portal Hostel) for looking after our car while we were on the hike.

Wow! My first time in the Sierra's. Quite the cherry-breaker. Had tons of sunshine and great company. I did it solo and would recommend the same to others. I found you can be as alone as you want. Also I didn't resupply anywhere except for Tuolumne Meadows, where I left myself a big cache. I found plenty of food at Red's Meadow and Muir Trail Ranch. Also I want to give a shout-out to Vermillion Valley Resort for their kindness, great beer and food!

BascuelaRe: Elwoods summer of love on the JMT 2009

Wow! Congrats on your trip. I too am in the industry and looking at "reductions" in my not so distance future. I sort of wanted to do something like that as well.

ElwoodElwoods summer of love on the JMT 2009  Sucess!

As a laid-off aircraft mechanic, I wanted something "BIG" to do this summer, besides just look for another avaition job. So, why not the JMT? I set-off out of Yosemite Valley on June 19th & finished at Whitney Portal on July 6th, it was a 18-day journey with one rest-day at Vermillion Valley Resort! The trip was great! But also, alot tougher than I anticipated, due to the large amounts of snow over most of the passes, & just the day-to-day travel thru the Sierra Nevada. It was indeed, a life time experience!

Best hike i have ever been fortunate enough to take. If doing it in summer I wouldnt bother sending much resupply food, as the Muir ranch and Vermillion resort will have tons of extra food from backpackers that overestimated their food needs. I ate beef stew and cliff bars and cookies for days after each ranch.

Date Climbed: Aug 15, 2008

Began at Happy isles on the 4th and finished at Mt. Whitney on the 15th. 12 days and all in my chacos! everyday but two we did 20+ miles and and we did Mather and Pinchot pass in the same day. It was a wonderful and amazing journey. It was really fast but incredible and worth every second of planning. One resupply at MTR. Wished I had taken more time to fish, but don't regret any of it!!!

Hiked the JMT southbound in 2003. Solo in 13 days, much of the second half was hobbling on a bad knee, but it was incredible. Some beautiful scenery, some great times, and surprisingly given its like the superhighway of the Sierra, lots of solitude. If interested feel free to see my JMT Trip report with pics and an interactive topo map.

I started in Tuolumne Meadows and spent 14 days on the JMT in 2006. A very scenic trip. Took a day off at Edison Lake, bar-b-que and beer.

Hiked with 2 others N to S. Took 14 days with 1.5 days rest at Vermillion. Food caches at Red's Meadow and Muir Trail Ranch. Hiked from base of Forester Pass to Whitney Portal (31 miles) in 14 hrs. Greeted by a black bear at whitney portal, waiting for me to get into a bear box. Ate half of 12 inch size pancake in the morning.

13 days with Stephen Quale and Jon McLeod. Jonathan Shapas started with us but had to drop out after a knee injury. Minor setback in the Valley when a bear broke into our car in Happy Isles. 13 days is a tough pace, but it allowed us to go light. Would like to spend more time around the LeConte canyon area -- amazing! Pictures are here.
